Microsoft's Response to the iPhone 7 is the Cheap, Internet-ready Nokia 216

With everyone focused on Apple’s iPhone 7, the news that Microsoft also rolled out a new phone, might have slipped by. Earlier this week, Microsoft introduced the brand new Nokia 216 (and Nokia 216 Dual SIM), an internet-enabled feature phone that "keeps you entertained for longer – all at an incredible price."

The Nokia 216 is nothing like the iPhone 7. It isn’t a smartphone, it doesn’t have a huge display, it doesn’t have a powerful camera, and it is not water resistant. It does have a headphone jack though. And the specs aren’t that bad, considering how cheap this thing is.

Nokia 216 Specs
  • Model – available as a single and as a dual SIM model.
  • Operating system – Nokia Series 30+ software.
  • Display – 2.4-inch, QVGA (320 x 240), 167ppi, LCD Transmissive display.
  • Camera – 0.3MP main camera with LED flash; 0.3MP front-facing camera with selfie flash and still image capture.
  • RAM & memory – 16MB of RAM; supports microSD card up to 32GB.
  • Media – audio player, video player, stereo FM radio.
  • Connectivity – 2.5G network (900/1800 MHz GSM network), micro USB, 3.5mm AV connector, Bluetooth 3.0.
  • Dimensions & weight – 118 x 50.2 x 13.5mm (height x width x thickness); 82.6g weight.
  • Battery – 1020mAH 3.7V replaceable battery.
  • Price – $37 USD (Rs 2495; will be available in India starting October 24).

Personally, I like the Nokia 230 better. It’s a few dollars more expensive, but it has a larger screen, better cameras, and a larger battery. Speaking about that, both devices have excellent battery life. Microsoft says that the Nokia 216 lasts up to 24 days in standby, offers up to 47 hours of music playback, and up to 18 hours of talk time.

The Nokia 216 is most likely the last Nokia phone that Microsoft releases. Back in May, Microsoft announced that it reached an agreement to sell its feature phone business for $350 million. The launch of the Nokia 216 comes before Microsoft completes the aforementioned sale. Once the sale’s completed, Microsoft will no longer have the rights to release Nokia phones.

The companies that bought Microsoft’s feature phone business have also bought the rights to the Nokia name – and they plan to release a new generation of Nokia-branded mobile devices that run Google’s Android mobile operating system.
