Pics from your holiday trip abroad? Go ahead and file them in the "things you want to share with others” category. You’ll want your family and friends to watch these pics and see how much fun you had. Personal photos and embarrassing videos? These fall in another category, the “I should make sure no one ever sees these” category.

Security company Avira recently released Avira Vault, a new iOS app that can put your private or embarrassing photos (and videos, as well as notes, credit card details, and passwords) in a secure digital vault, thus keeping them away from prying eyes. You can give grandma your iPhone safe in the knowledge that she won’t have a heart attack when she stumbles onto one of your personal photos.

“In today’s hyper-open world, people need a private corner on their smartphones that combines privacy and security with real convenience. That’s why we’ve developed the Avira Vault for iOS. Avira Vault lets you share what you want to share, browse where you want to browse, and keep the rest – pictures, passwords, financial information, and browsing history – hidden from prying eyes,” Avira explained in a press release.

How Avira Vault protects your privacy

Take all the stuff you want to keep away from prying eyes and put it in a secure digital vault. That is, in a nutshell, how Avira Vault protects your privacy. The nice thing is that you can put lots of things in the vault:
  • Photos and videos – import pics into the vault, take pics from within the vault.
  • Notes and financial information.
  • Credit card details – scan and securely store your credit cards.
  • Passwords – keep your passwords securely stored and protected against hackers and snoops

If you use iCloud, Avira Vault lets you encrypt your photos before uploading them to the cloud. This will protect your privacy in case if a hack attack or data leak.

There are three ways to unlock a vault. Or to put it in other words, you can choose how you want to open the vault: with a PIN code, with a pattern, or with a fingerprint.

Avira Scout secure web browser

Avira Vault features a secure web browser called Avira Scout (introduced this summer and currently in Beta).

Avira Scout protects your privacy by operating in incognito mode – if someone has access to your phone, that someone won’t be able to see what you did online. On top of that, Avira Scout keeps you nice and safe by blocking infected websites.

Speaking about browsers, here are 7 great ones. I consider these to be the best web browsers for iOS.

Get more by upgrading to Avira Vault Pro

“The security of your iOS device – and its contents – is priceless. That’s why Avira Vault is completely free with additional features and information storage available to premium users. As a company which has been protecting people from online threats for nearly 30 years, we know that your security needs for an iOS device go far beyond anti-malware protection,” said Avira.

Avira Vault Free comes with multiple limitations, like the fact that you can store a maximum of 100 files, just 1 credit card, and only 3 passwords. To get rid of these and other limitations, you have to upgrade to Avira Vault Pro. Here’s what you’ll get by upgrading.

When will it come in handy?

Here’s the scenario I had in mind. You’ll go and spend the holidays with your family. You’ll lock your phone to keep out mom, dad, that annoying cousin, or some other family member. What if you want to show mom some of your pictures? If you hand her your iPhone, she’ll go through your camera roll and she might stumble on some pictures you don’t want her to see. Avira Vault makes sure that doesn’t happen.

Which reminds me about The Way You Are, an ad produced by Samsung’s French arm, ad that won a gold EPICA advertising award. The ad’s premise is simple: would you let a stranger rummage around your phone in exchange for the vacation of your dreams?

Here’s a tip for anyone who wants to shares photo with others: try BitTorrent Shoot. BitTorrent has plently of cool apps to offer. This one, BitTorrent Shoot, lets you batch share photos with family members or friends who have an iPhone, an Android, or even a Windows Phone.
