22 Exciting Games We Can't Wait to Play in 2016

There won’t be any shortage of exciting video games this 2016. Here are the most anticipated ones, the titles that we just can’t wait to get our hands on.

Please note that I’ve specifically focused on PC games. The titles presented below may be available for multiple platforms. But, if they are not available for Windows, they’ve been deliberately left out. So don’t expect to see any Xbox or PlayStation exclusives on the list.

The Witness
  • Game type – first-person open-world 3D puzzle video game (created by Jonathan Blow who is best known for the Braid platform and puzzle video game).
  • Release date – January 26, 2016 for Windows and PlayStation 4. An iOS version will be released at a later date.
  • Gameplay – explore an island and solve all sorts of puzzles. Jonathan Blow estimates it will take the average player some 80 hours to solve the 650+ puzzles the game has to offer.



Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • Game type – third-person open-world action-adventure game.
  • Release date – January 28, 2016 for Windows. Already available for Xbox 360 an Xbox One. Will become available for PlayStation 4 in Q4 2016.
  • Gameplay – Lara journeys into the heart of Siberia in search of the lost city of Kitezh and the secret to immortality. She has to fight a ruthless organization known as Trinity, organization that is responsible for the death of Lara’s father.



XCOM 2
  • Game type – turn-based tactical game. The sequel to the award-winning strategy title XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
  • Release date – February 5, 2016 for Windows, Linux and OS X.
  • Gameplay – It’s 20 years in the future, humanity has lost the war against the aliens, and the XCOM paramilitary organization is largely forgotten. You must help XCOM recruit soldiers, build a resistance network, expose the evil alien agenda, and save humanity.



Unravel
  • Game type – physics-based puzzle platformer.
  • Release date – February 9, 2016 for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – You play as Yarny, an adorable creature that is made of yarn, and you have to make your way through lush environments inspired by the breath-taking landscapes of northern Scandinavia. Check out this lengthy article to see what this game is all about.



Firewatch
  • Game type – first-person adventure game.
  • Release date – February 9, 2016 for Windows, Linux, OS X and PlayStation 4.
  • Gameplay – the game follows the story of a volunteer fire lookout in the aftermath of the Yellowstone fires of 1988.



Street Fighter V
  • Game type – side-scrolling fighting video game.
  • Release date – February 16, 2016 in North America and Europe. February 18 in Japan.
  • Gameplay – two fighters use a variety of attacks and special abilities to knock out their opponent.



Far Cry Primal
  • Game type – open-world action-adventure game.
  • Release date – March 1, 2016 for Windows. February 23, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

  • Game type – open-world third-person shooter role-playing game.
  • Release date – March 8, 2016 for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – a pandemic spreads through New York City. It’s up to you to restore order and investigate the source of the virus.



Dark Souls III
  • Game type – third-person action role-playing video game.
  • Release date – March 24 in Japan, April 12, 2016 for the rest of the world. Available for Windows, PS4, and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – closely follows the gameplay of Dark Souls II, director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained.



Battleborn
  • Game type – first-person shooter.
  • Release date – May 3, 2016 for Windows, PS4, and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – in a space fantasy setting, you have to engage in combat to protect the universe's very last star from a mysterious evil.



Homefront: The Revolution

  • Game type – open-world first-person shooter
  • Release date – May 17, 2016 in North America, May 20 in Europe. Available for Windows, PS4, Xbox One, Linux, OS X.
  • Gameplay – 2 years after the original game and 4 years after the Korean invasion, Ethan "Birdy" Brady stages a resistance movement and attempts to retake Philadelphia.



Mirror's Edge Catalyst
  • Game type – first-person action-adventure platform video game.
  • Release date – June 7, 2016 in the North America and June 9, 2016 in Europe. Available for Windows, PS4, and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – play as Faith Connors and traverse the futuristic city of Glass. Use parkour movements to explore the environment, evade enemies, and complete missions.



No Man's Sky
  • Game type – first-person open-universe adventure survival video game from indie studio Hello Games.
  • Release date – June 2016 for Windows and PS4.
  • Gameplay – This is a science-fiction game set in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy. You are a planetary explorer in an uncharted galaxy. You have to travel from planet to planet, explore the planets, collect resources, and battle enemies.



Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
  • Game type – cyberpunk-themed action video game that combines first-person shooter, stealth and role-playing elements.
  • Release date – August 23, 2016 for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – the protagonist, Adam Jensen, works with an international coalition to stop terrorist attacks. In a world where most people are against augmented persons, the terrorists demand equality for augmented individuals.



Mass Effect Andromeda
  • Game type – action role-playing third-person shooter video game.
  • Release date – December 2016 for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – choose between a male or a female character and pilot the Mako, the six-wheeled vehicle seen in the first Mass Effect game.



Cuphead
  • Game type – run and gun platform indie video game.
  • Release date – 2016 (TBA). Available for Windows and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – a challenging platformer with an art style that seems ripped from a 1930s cartoon.



Dishonored 2

  • Game type – action-adventure stealth role-playing video game.
  • Release date – November 11, 2016. Available for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – the action takes place 15 years after the first game. Empress Emily Kaldwin is dethroned and the Empire plunges into chaos. You can play as Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano and save the Empire.



Doom
  • Game type – first-person shooter.
  • Release date – May 13, 2016. Available for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – Bethesda reboots the Doom series. The game aims to offer “a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience.”



For Honor
  • Game type – online action hack and slash video game set in the medieval period.
  • Release date – 2016 (TBA). Available for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – pick one of three factions (knight, samurai, Viking) and do battle with axes, swords and other melee weapons.




Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  • Game type – open-world tactical shooter.
  • Release date – 2016 (TBA). Available for Windows, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – the action takes place in modern day Bolivia. You’re a member of the Ghosts, an elite team that has been dispatched by the US Army to deal with the Santa Blanca drug cartel. You are to destroy the cartel and expose its ties to the local government.



Mafia III
  • Game type – open-world third-person action-adventure video game.
  • Release date – 2016 (TBA). Available for Windows, OS X, PS4 and Xbox One.
  • Gameplay – the action takes place in New Orleans, in 1968. The game’s protagonist is Lincoln Clay, a biracial orphan and Vietnam veteran. After the Italian mob tries to kill Clay, he starts his own criminal organization to get revenge.



Overwatch
  • Game type – team-based first-person shooter.
  • Release date – 2016 (TBA).
  • Gameplay – the action in the game takes place in the near future, on Earth. In this future world, teams of soldiers, scientists, adventurers, and oddities clash to control iconic locations. The game features 21 heroes, each with their own unique weapons and abilities.
