Unravel, a new game from Coldwood and EA, presents a heartfelt story about trying to mend a broken bond and focuses on overcoming obstacles, small and big ones alike. The one to overcome them is Yarny, the game’s adorable protagonist who is made from a single thread of yarn, yarn that slowly unravels as he moves. Yarny embarks on an epic voyage, traverses stunning environments, and overcomes all sorts of obstacles on the way.

That’s the quick way to present Unravel. Now, here’s a closer and more detailed look at all the things you need to know about this inspiring new game.

What sort of game is it?

Unravel is a physics-based puzzle platformer. You play as Yarny, an adorable creature that is made of yarn. As Yarny, you must make your way through lush environments inspired by the breath-taking landscapes of northern Scandinavia, and you must use your wits to overcome all the various obstacles you come across. Use Yarny’s unraveled thread to swing across a gap, to hitch a ride on a flying kite, to solve simple and complex environmental puzzles. Your goal is to try and make the yarn reach all the way through the game, from start to finish.

Why does Yarny have to do all this?

The game’s underlying story, told completely without words, is a heartfelt one: try to mend a broken bond, reconnect the memories of a long lost family. Yarni is the bond that ties everything together, the one who can reunite a family’s lost loved ones and help a lonely old woman reconnect with all that she has lost.

“The idea of Unravel was created from a very personal place. We didn’t start out by saying we’re going to make a puzzle platforming game. We started by thinking more about our lives, and the things we hold meaningful. We wanted the game to have a heart and the gameplay could always be designed to represent that,” says Martin Sahlin, Creative Director at Coldwood. “The tale of Unravel is about love, and the bonds between people. And the yarn is a representation of that. Yarny’s red thread is the tie that connects everything in the game, from the gameplay mechanics to the story, and the people in it.”

Can I see it in action?

The game is developed by Coldwood Interactive, an independent game studio based in Sweden, in partnership with Electronic Arts (EA), the gaming powerhouse that needs no introduction. EA unveiled Unravel at this year’s E3, alongside Star Wars Battlefront and Mirror’s Edge Catalyst.

Here’s the official announce gameplay trailer from E3.

A slightly longer trailer was unveiled at this year’s Gamescom. It’s worth checking out because it does a better job of showing Unravel’s environmental puzzles.

And last but not least, this is the official story trailer that has just been rolled out, alongside a precise release date for the game.

When’s it going to be released?

Unravel is going to be released early next year, on February 9, 2016. It will be available for digital download on Origin for PC, the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft.

If you’re excited about this game, go and pre-order Unravel.

The game costs $19.99 in North America and €19.99 in Europe. It’s worth pointing out that EA Access members can play Unravel before the February 9 release, and get a 10% discount on the full game, but only on Xbox One.
