The development team behind Picasa, the image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, has recently announced that the application reached another milestone in its development process. To be more precise, the team announced that Picasa 3.8 has been released to the public. The latest version comes with “lots of cool new features”, Google’s Jonathan Sposato explained.

Let’s take a look at the cool new features Picasa 3.8 brings to the table:
  • Face Movie
If you have a bunch of photos of the same person, you can use Face Movies to create a movie. The interesting thing is that Face Movie keeps that person’s face stationary throughout the movie. “stead of the usual transition from one photo to the next, the images align themselves to the face in the photo. This creates an extremely smooth viewing experience which allows the person in the photos to remain the focus rather than the transition effects themselves,” explained Sposato.

A video presentation of how Face Movie works is available on YouTube (click the image below).
  • Picnik
As you may remember, back in March Mountain View-based search engine giant Google acquired Picnik, a powerful online photo editor. Then in July Google announced that it integrated Picnik into Picasa Web Albums. Picnik has now been integrated into Picasa as well; the rich editing tools that Picnik has to offer are now available in Picasa 3.8.
  • Batch upload
Batch upload from Picasa to Picasa Web Albums is one feature that users have been asking for. With version 3.8, the users’ requests have been answered. Users can now upload multiple photos and multiple albums at once from Picasa 3.8 to Picasa Web Albums. Furthermore users can remove albums from Picasa Web, change the upload size, visibility and sync state of photos that are already online.
  • Metadata
Added support for Color Management (read photo metadata and present the photo in the correct color space) and XMP.

  • Under the hood
“We’re also adding a few other under-the-hood updates such as improved support of external drives, increased efficiency of CPU usage, and improved settings when sharing with your Gmail contact groups,” explained Sposato.
