There are a myriad of software applications that you can use should you want to edit an image or two. The catch is that they need to be installed on your system to work – which is not exactly handy if you have to edit the image while away from your computer. One solution would be to get a portable photo editing application. Or better yet, use an in the cloud photo editing service.

That is precisely what Picnik does. It is a site that offers a lot of tools to help you edit your images – things like crop or add interesting effects. It is all done in the cloud so you do not have to install anything on your computer. You can visit the Picnik site and edit images no matter where you are; all you need is a computer and an internet connection.

Earlier this week Mountain View-based search engine giant Google announced that it acquired Picnik. Product Management Director, Brian Axe, commented: “We're very impressed with the Picnik team and the product they've created, and we're excited to welcome them to Google. We're looking forward to collaborating closely with them to improve the online photo editing experience on the web. In the meantime, we encourage you to head to Picnik, import some of your photos from Picasa Web Albums, Flickr or Facebook and try your hand at photo editing in the cloud!”

Google will continue to support all of Picnik’s partners. Right now it is working on integration and new features. The fact that Google acquired Picnik will have no impact on the end user. You can use Picnik just like before.

"Google processes petabytes of data every day, and with their worldwide infrastructure and world-class team, it is truly the best home we could have found. Under the Google roof we’ll reach more people than ever before, impacting more lives and making more photos more awesome. Nothing is changing right away, but Picnik now has more potential than ever before. The team that built Picnik from the grass up will continue making advanced and powerful photo-editing easier, more intuitive and more fun,” commented the Picnik team.
