Released Today: Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11
Today, the 22nd of March, is the day when the Angry Birds Rio game is scheduled to be released to app stores everywhere. It is also the day when Norwegian developer Opera Software rolled out two major updates for two of its products, mainly Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11.
“If you’ve lost that loving feeling for the Web on your phone or tablet, don’t let it bring you down. Just try one of our browsers,” said CEO of Opera Software, Lars Boilesen. “The sun always shines on TV, but the Opera browser shines on more than 3000 devices.”
According to Opera Software, Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11 come with the following new features:
- Improved scrolling, panning and zooming.
- True pinch-to-zoom is available for devices that support it.
- A new share button that lets you post whatever you want to Twitter, Facebook, vKontakte, or My Opera.
- Optimized for tablets. As Opera Software put it, Opera for tablets has a brand new interface that “is sure to rock you like a hurricane.”
“Can’t get no satisfaction from the mobile Web? Then you will fall head over heels for the new Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers launched today, now also available to cherish on tablets. Opera’s mobile browsers are the world’s most popular, the weapon of choice for 100 million people worldwide, used on more than 3000 devices,” said Opera Software in a press release.

The main difference between the two browsers is the Presto engine. The Presto browser engine in Opera Mobile is installed directly on your mobile device, making Opera Mobile a standalone HTML browser. In Opera Mini, the Presto browser engine is located on a server, which means Opera Mini is in fact a Java-based proxy browser that delivers web pages via Opera's servers. That is why Opera Mini can be installed on more basic phones – more than 3000 devices as Opera Software explained above.
Opera Mini can be a bit faster than Opera Mobile and that’s because traffic is routed through Opera servers and shrunk down. To get faster browsing speeds on Opera Mobile, turn on Opera Turbo and the traffic will be routed through Opera’s servers as well.
