Chrome Experiments: Not Your Mother's JavaScript
Following the news that Google Chrome 2.0 Beta has become available to people all over the world (testers and fans alike) we have more good new to report: Google has launched Chrome Experiments, a multitude of JavaScript experiments that showcase the browser’s strength and should leave you impressed (mandatory YouTube link showcasing Chrome experiments available here ).
“We think JavaScript is awesome. We also think browsers are awesome. Indeed, when we talk about them, we say they are the cat's meow – which is an American expression meaning AWESOME. In light of these deeply held beliefs, we created this site to showcase cool experiments for both JavaScript and web browsers. These experiments were created by designers and programmers from around the world. Their work is making the web faster, more fun, and more open – the same spirit in which we built Google Chrome,” explained Google.
It must be said that these experiments also work in other browsers – I gave them a shot in Firefox 3.0.7 and did not experiment any problems. Google has acknowledged this fact, but it emphasizes that they work best with Chrome (which makes sense considering the fact that their V8 JavaScript engine is the fastest on the market to date).
“When Google Chrome launched last September, it included a powerful JavaScript engine, V8, which was built to make the next generation of web applications perform faster in the browser. In the past few months, we've reached out to more than a dozen developers and designers to experiment with V8 and to find new and fun uses for JavaScript. The results of their experimentation have been great, with each project turning the browser window into an interactive application, a game, or even a piece of art. Although you don't need Google Chrome to view the site, some of the experiments may run slower, or incorrectly, in older browsers,” said Google Creative Lab’s Aaron Koblin.
