Apple Pulls iPhone Bluetooth Headset from the Market
Back in 2007, when Apple introduced the now immensely popular iPhone to the world, it also announced a handy piece of technology that was meant to work beautifully with the iPhone – the Bluetooth headset. For no official reason, the California-based company has decided to pull the device from the market (as you can see from the image at the bottom of the article).
Apple may yet to release an official explanation why it decided to discontinue the Bluetooth headset, but the opinion on the web is unanimous – its lack of an extensive set of features, coupled with its not so stellar performance and poor battery life meant it was a great source of disappointment for users all over the world. Proof of this is the fact that hundreds of people have rated the device as “average” and even “below-average”.
Even more proof is the fact that the Bluetooth did not sell very well. Initially the device was made available for $129 and came with a travel cable and dual dock. Apple then pulled the dual dock, which allowed the user to charge the iPhone and the headset at the same time, and dropped the price to $99. But sales obviously did no go up since the headset has now been pulled of the market.
Perhaps the user’s lack of interest in the Bluetooth is best expressed by Dave Caolo, TUAW: “I'll admit it: I loathe Bluetooth headsets. It's impossible to walk around with one of those things protruding from your head without looking like a total tool. No one's impressed, Lieutenant Uhura.”
Despite it being an unlikely event, it is rumored that Apple will replace the Bluetooth headset with some other device. With the iPhone OS 3.0 featuring support for A2Dp Stereo Bluetooth connectivity, word on the web is that Apple will replace the now discontinued headset with a set of Stereo Bluetooth headphones. You should take this information with a grain of salt as it has not been confirmed by Apple in any way – it is just speculation.
