The Skype for iPhone app has made its way to the iTunes App Store just a expected, much to the enjoyment of numerous users out there. But their enjoyment was short-lived as the app would refuse to install. Skype has come out to announce that it is aware of the issue and that it may have pinpointed the source of the problem. In related iPhone news, the Yahoo! team has announced Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone – soon.

“Some of you have reported that Skype crashes during installation or launch. Our initial investigations suggest that this may happen on jailbroken phones, where the underlying iPhone software has been modified. Unfortunately we can’t be held responsible if Skype for iPhone misbehaves in these circumstances,” says Skype’s Peter Parkes.

There is one other interesting development in the Skype for iPhone story: most people are using Apple’s stable iPhone OS 2.2.1, and for them connecting to Skype in order to make voice calls can only be done via WiFi; people who were daring enough to get iPhone OS 3.0 Beta (the first Beta, not Beta 2 which has been made available to developers – details here ) have discovered that they can connect via 3G. It is even possible to make voice calls over EDGE – a video presentation is available here.

Moving on, if you would much rather use Yahoo! Messenger on your iPhone, the development team behind the popular IM (instant messaging) client has announced it will make an iPhone dedicated app available to you in the near future.

“Our new Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone application will be available soon! We announced it tonight in conjunction with the CTIA Wireless conference. We’ll let you know when Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone is available to download,” explains Product Manager Sarah Bacon. A teaser preview of how Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone will work has been posted here.
