Today, February 19, is the day when we celebrate Chocolate Mint Day. It’s also the day when Photoshop, Adobe’s powerful image editing software, celebrates its 25th anniversary. As a little side note, today is also the day when Rovio Stars published the new Jolly Jam game for iOS and Android.

Adobe is doing two things to mark Photoshop’s 25th anniversary. It is showcasing 25 of the most creative visual artists under 25 who use Photoshop; selected artists will present their work on Photoshop’s Instagram. That would be the first. And the second is an advertising campaign for The Academy Awards; called “Dream On”, the campaign incredible work from Photoshop artists and iconic images from major motion pictures that used Photoshop.

Way back in 1990, on the 19th of February to be more precise, Photoshop version 1.0 was released, exclusively for Macintosh. Who would have known back then that Photoshop will be a huge hit and will become a cultural icon? For the past 25 years Photoshop got better and better, became one of the most recognized software brands in the world, and turned into an indispensable creativity tool in a digital age. There are now tens of millions of people from all over the world who use Photoshop for their digital manipulation needs.

“Adobe thought we’d sell about 500 copies of Photoshop a month,” said Thomas Knoll, Adobe Fellow and Photoshop co-creator. “Not in my wildest dreams did we think creatives would embrace the product in the numbers and ways they have. It’s inspiring to see the beautiful images our customers create, the careers Photoshop has launched and the new uses people all over the world find for Photoshop every day.”

In one way or another, Photoshop is linked to all the inspirational imagery around us. The cup I have on my desk has a logo on it – chances are it was designed with Photoshop. The new game I just installed on my phone – chances are the imagery was edited with Photoshop. The movie I saw last night – surely, some of the images were manipulated with Photoshop.

“For 25 years, Photoshop has inspired artists and designers to craft images of stunning beauty and reality-bending creativity,” said Shantanu Narayen, Adobe president and CEO. “From desktop publishing, to fashion photography, movie production, website design, mobile app creation and now 3D Printing, Photoshop continues to redefine industries and creative possibilities. And today that Photoshop magic is available to millions of new users, thanks to Adobe Creative Cloud.”
