Redmond-based software giant Microsoft expanded its Surface family of PCs by introducing a new model: Surface Windows 8 Pro. The new model will go on sale in the US early next month.

Surface is the name of the interesting tablet PC that Microsoft introduced alongside the touch-optimized Windows 8 operating system. Until now there was just one model in the Surface family of PCs – the Windows RT-powered model that comes with an ARM processor. That is about to change. Come February, a new model with an Intel Core i5 processor and powered by Windows 8 Pro will become part of the Surface family of PCs.

Microsoft announced that it will roll out the new model, Surface Windows 8 Pro, on the 9th of February. The tablet will be available for purchase in the United States and Canada at all Microsoft retail stores, on Microsoft’s online store, at Staples and Best Buy in the US, and from a number of locations in Canada. There will be a 64GB and a 128GB Surface Windows 8 Pro model; pricing starts at an estimated retail price of US$899. The device will features a Surface pen with Palm Block technology, designed specifically to let you edit, collaborate and get things done faster.

Besides rolling out the new Surface Windows 8 Pro, Microsoft will expand the availability of its existing Surface model. In the near future customers will be able to purchase Surface Windows RT in 13 additional markets worldwide: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

“The response to Surface has been exciting to see,” said Panos Panay, general manager, Microsoft Surface. “We’re thrilled to continue growing the Surface family with the availability of Surface Windows 8 Pro on Feb. 9 and by increasing the number of places customers can experience Surface firsthand.”
