'I Want My Money Back' Offer: Wolfram Alpha Lowers iPhone App Price, Offers Refunds

I didn’t want to cover this story yesterday because you would have though it was an April Fools prank – and rightly so since all the news stories we covered yesterday were indeed nothing but jokes. You didn’t actually believe that Google would change its name to Topeka, or that Intego would use edible packaging, or that Linux Mint would discontinue all editions after striking a deal with Microsoft, now did you?

The big story is that the Wolfram Alpha team has decided to drop the price of the Wolfram Alpha iPhone app down from a rather hefty $49.99 to a more affordable $1.99. Furthermore, if you purchased the Wolfram Alpha iPhone app at the old price of $49.99, you can receive a refund. If you purchased the app during the Christmas Holidays sale for $19.99 you can also receive a refund.

To be eligible for said refund you must have purchased the app on or before the 1st of April, 2010. Also, you must complete a request form by the 3rd of May. In the form you must provide several bits of information: the email address associated with your iTunes account, the unique device ID of your iPhone or iPod touch, and screenshots from the iTunes Store.

As you may remember, the Wolfram Alpha app was launched back in October, 2009. At the time of the launch iPhone users had a choice: they could either pay for the app, or they could simply access the mobile optimized Wolfram Alpha site and get the same functionality for no charge. But Wolfram Alpha pulled the rug from under their feet when it announced that it would drop the mobile optimized site.

The Wolfram Alpha team now says that it wants to focus on ubiquity and wants everyone to have access to the computational knowledge engine. Consequently it is dropping the price of the iPhone app, offering refunds, and bringing back the mobile optimized site (http://m.wolframalpha.com).

“At Wolfram|Alpha, our mission is to make all the world’s systematic knowledge available, accessible, and computable. The number-one priority of our new Managing Director, Barak Berkowitz, is to get Wolfram|Alpha in the hands of everyone. It’s all about ubiquity. As we approach the anniversary of the launch of Wolfram|Alpha, we’ll be moving into Wolfram|Alpha’s next phase, centered on growth—increasing the exposure and use of Wolfram|Alpha both by individuals seeking knowledge and by developers building computational knowledge into their applications in interesting ways. We want Wolfram|Alpha to become ubiquitous,” explained Jeremy Schoeller Porter, Business Development at Wolfram Alpha.
