The development process of the Firefox web browser has reached another milestone this weekend, the weekend when was focused on Halloween and Sophos’ International Kill-A-Zombie Day. Over the weekend the Mozilla Foundation released the first Beta version of the next iteration of the Firefox browser, Firefox 3.6.
Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 is now available for download. If you’re interested in getting it, check out the download link at the bottom of the article. Keep in mind that this is a Beta version. The usual warnings apply: it may crash, it may lose data, it may ruin your day, it is only meant for testers, early adopters and enthusiasts. Or as Mozilla Evangelist Christopher Blizzard jokingly said, Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 will “eat your data and burn your house down.”
“The Mozilla community is proud to release Firefox 3.6 Beta 1 for download. This beta version of the next version of Firefox is built on the Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering engine, containing many improvements for web developers, Add-on developers, and users. The Mozilla community appreciates your feedback and assistance in testing this preview of the next version of Firefox. Your beta software will update itself periodically, and eventually will be updated to the final release itself,” announced Firefox Director, Mike Beltzner.
The notable changes in Firefox 3.6 are:
- Built-in support for Personas
- Built-in support for dragging and dropping files from the desktop into Firefox.
- The user will be alerted when a plugin needs to be updated.
- Full screen and poster frames support for open, native video.
- WOFF font format support.
- The performance of the JavaScript engine has been improved.
- New CSS, DOM and HTML5 web technologies support.
- Multiple background images support.
Support for the following features is not in Firefox 3.6 Beta 1, but will be in Firefox 3.6 Final:
- Support for <input type=”file” multiple> will be added to let the user upload multiple files from the same file upload control.
- Support for CSS gradients will be changed due to negative feedback.
- The File API draft spec will be updated.
If you would like to get Firefox 3.6 Beta 1, a download location is available here. As usual, the software is available for download to Windows, Mac OS X and Linux users.
