We knew Microsoft was readying Windows 10 for a summer 2015 release, but we did not know precisely when Microsoft would roll out the new operating system. Well, now we do!

Microsoft recently announced that Windows 10 will be released to the public on July 29, 2015.

You can reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade right now and install it once it's rolled out to the public this July. Starting with and after July 29, you'll be able to purchase a new PC that comes with the new Windows 10 operating system or purchase retail and electronic versions of Windows 10.

Here’s Windows chief Joe Belfiore talking about the main new features Windows 10 has to offer.

And here’s a text version of the main new features Windows 10 has to offer.

Windows 10 – Main New Features
  • Start Menu – the Start Menu is back; it presents your most used apps and a bunch of customizable live tiles.
  • Cortana – Microsoft’s personal digital assistant is built into the OS. Use Cortana to search for things, let her notify you about important events, let her deliver news and other useful information.
  • Cortana for mobile – Cortana for Windows Phone is already out there. It will be accompanied by Cortana for iOS and Cortana for Android. Cortana will be available for all major mobile platforms.
  • Microsoft Edge – the successor to Internet Explorer comes with a fresh interface, faster browsing speeds, a Web Note feature that lets you draw on webpages, a new Reading Mode, Cortana integration, and a new rendering engine.
  • Windows Hello – a biometric authentication solution that will make passwords obsolete. Instead of typing a password to access your account, you can let Windows Hello check your face, iris or fingerprint.
  • Apps – Windows 10 comes with Photos, Music, Maps, People, Calendar, and other useful apps.
  • Xbox Live and integrated app – the Xbox app for Windows 10 will let you connect with friends, earn achievements, and even connect to your Xbox One console and play games on your PC.
  • Windows Store – a central location to get any Windows app.
  • Free – the OS will be offered as a free upgrade to customers who have a qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 device. Please note that this is a time-limited offer: you have one year from the time Windows 10 is available to upgrade.

Reserve your free Windows 10 upgrade today

You should get a Windows 10 prompt in the system tray. Like this.

Click it to reserve your free upgrade to Windows 10. Once the operating system is rolled out to the public on July 29th, Windows 10 will be downloaded to your device and you’ll be notified when it’s ready to install. You can install it right away or wait for a more convenient time.

Microsoft rolled out these two videos to show how easy it is to reserve and upgrade to Windows 10. If a 10-year-old can do it, surely you can too.
