Twitter Turns On HTTPS For Everyone
Security oriented people who don’t want to take the risk that someone is snooping on their web traffic will remember that back in March 2011 Twitter announced that it added a setting that let users access Twitter.com via an encrypted HTTPS connection. Instead of manually typing https://twitter.com or bookmarking this URL, Twitter user could just turn on the “Always use HTTPS” and thus make sure that every time they log in they’re using a safe, encrypted connection.
Twitter’s Carolyn Penner explained at the time that “using HTTPS for your favorite Internet services is particularly important when using them over unsecured WiFi connections. This will improve the security of your account and better protect your information if you’re using Twitter over an unsecured Internet connection, like a public WiFi network, where someone may be able to eavesdrop on your site activity. In the future, we hope to make HTTPS the default setting.”
The news is that the team behind the popular social networking and micro-blogging site has turned on HTTPS for everyone. The future Carolyn Penner talked about above is here. HTTPS is now turned on by default for all users when they sign into Twitter.
“HTTPS is one of the best ways to keep your account safe and it will only get better as we continue to improve HTTPS support on our web and mobile clients,” explained the Twitter team.
If for some reason you don’t care for the enhanced level of security HTTPS has to offer, if you do not want to use an encrypted connection and you want to stick with a regular one, there is something you can do. You can go to your Account Settings page and choose not to use HTTPS. As someone who takes security very seriously, I would advise you not to do that.
