After today’s lengthy article on how Google trolled on April Fools, we know switch focus on Skype, the company behind the incredibly popular instant messaging and VoIP client. On April 1st, Skype introduced a new service meant to help you stay in touch with friends. The new service is called Skype for String.
In its stride to provide a better means of communication, Microsoft-owned Skype introduced Skype for String this April. The new service lets you make free audio calls to other Skype for String users, add a contact by using the specially provided hardware, and make a video call if conditions permit (the friend has to be within eye sight).
The company explained that Skype for String is a new and more human way to talk to others – you won’t need a computer, software installed on said computer, or a internet connection to talk with others using Skype for String. On top of that, the new Skype for String does not need electricity to run.
“Skype for String relies on a recently discovered, natural form of peer-to-peer technology that allows your voice to travel over long distances without electricity. All you'll need to get started is a set of cups and a string with a minimum bandwidth of 5mm. Skype for String will work with any cup and string, but for the best results, we suggest using a Skype certified set,” says Skype for String’s official “How does it work” description.
The image below will better put things in perspective about what Skype for String is all about.
The one thing that Skype for String does not do is let you calls phones and mobiles. For that you will need the traditional version of Skype and a bit of Skype Credit.
