Nokia Unveils Two Windows Phone 7-powered Smartphones
After Apple and Google made the headlines, Apple by announcing the release of the iPhone 4S and Google by announcing the release of the Galaxy Nexus, it is time for Finnish cellphone maker Nokia to make the news as well. Just like Apple and Google, Nokia makes the news because it presented smartphone devices.
Nokia introduced two new smartphones yesterday, the 26th of October. The two new smartphones are named Nokia Lumia 800 and Nokia Lumia 710. Both are powered by the Microsoft-developed Windows Phone 7 operating system, the mobile counterpart of its popular Windows 7 OS (more than 450 million Windows 7 licenses have been sold so far, that’s how popular it is).
The Nokia Lumia 800 has a 3.7” ClearBlack display, a 1.4Ghz processor with a dedicated GPU, 16GB of storage space, a Carl Zeiss camera, and a unique unibody polycarbonate chassis available in 3 colors (black, magenta, cyan). The smartphone is available for pre-order right now on Nokia.com.
The smartphone will hit the market this fall; 30 carriers in 6 European countries will sell the device for about €420 (some $590 at today’s exchange rate). By the end of the year it will go on sale in Russia, India, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The Nokia Lumia 710 features the same processor and has the same storage space as the Lumia 800. It will be available for purchase for about €270.
“These two new Lumia phones say loud and clear that Nokia is re-committing itself to building the best smartphones on the planet – and that they’re doing it with Windows Phone. That means that just like we built Windows Phone to put people first, they’re building hardware to do the same,” said Microsoft PC Evangelist Ben Rudolph.
The release of the Lumi 800 and 710 smartphones powered by Windows Phone 7 is the result of the partnership Nokia and Microsoft struck six months ago. Back in February 2011, Nokia and Microsoft announced that they want to “jointly create market-leading mobile products and services designed to offer consumers, operators and developers unrivalled choice and opportunity.” Details on the partnership are available here.
