Great news for every Windows desktop user who relies on OneNote to take notes: Microsoft recently announced that it is removing all feature restrictions for OneNote 2013 Free Edition. Features that were reserved for the paid edition are now available for the free edition as well. Isn’t that great?

A list of all the feature restrictions Microsoft removed is available below.

OneNote, Microsoft’s note taking application, is available as a mobile app, as a web app, and as a desktop application. OneNote for desktop is available as a freeware and as a shareware version.

OneNote Free Edition the freeware version of OneNote for desktop, was introduced last year. As expected, this free for personal use application comes with some feature restrictions. It makes sense: to push you to get the paid version, Microsoft has to tempt you with something; in this case, that “something” is access to some advanced features.

Well, not anymore! Microsoft recently announced that it is removing all feature restrictions, that it is no longer blocking access to advanced features. The company announced that it decided to let OneNote 2013 Free Edition users access features that were previously available only for the paid edition.

“We’re happy to share that we’re adding even more to the free edition,” announced the OneNote Team. “We’re removing all feature restrictions from OneNote 2013. Starting today you’ll be able to access the full power of OneNote on your PC.”

OneNote Free Edition – Unlocked Features
  • Password protection – you can protect sensitive information by password protecting it.
  • Page history – view a page’s previous versions.
  • Audio/video recording – you can take notes while recording.
  • Audio search – search for a word in a voice or video recording.
  • Embedded files – insert Office documents and other files into a notebook.
Please note that OneNote stores notes on OneDrive, Microsoft’s cloud service. OneDrive gives you 15GB of cloud storage space when you sign up for a Microsoft account. OneNote 2013 works with desktop computers powered by Windows 7 or Windows 8.
