Microsoft has announced that it wants you, the software developer that came up with a iPhone app to consider porting that app to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile and the next iteration of the smartphone-dedicated operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5. The thing is that the road to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile comes with a few hurdles that you need to get over.

The first stepping stone to the marketplace is the Windows Mobile Application Verifier Test – your app must perform its primary and secondary functions while the Windows Mobile Application Verifier app runs. The goal of the Windows Mobile Application Verifier app is to test whether your app is stable and to detect common programming mistakes. It will assess the app's stability, pinpoint memory leaks, handle leaks, and some forms of heap corruption. It will attach to the app while it is running and attempt to identify problems and issues that the developer may have overlooked.

Microsoft has now come forth with details on another stepping stone in the road to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile: Hopper for Windows Mobile 6.5. This piece of software, which is compatible with WinMo 6.0, 3.1 and 6.5, is meant to stimulate the input stress on WinMo-powered devices.

“Hopper will stress all applications that are available through the menu system by rapidly sending keystrokes and screen taps in a random fashion. By sending a large number of user inputs very rapidly, Hopper can quickly isolate troublesome scenarios and find bugs in your applications. The Hopper Test is required for Windows Marketplace for Mobile application certification. The application must complete two hours of the Hopper test without exhibiting unpredictable behavior, hanging or crashing,” explained Microsoft Developer Evangelist, Eric Nelson.

Thanks to Hoper you may uncover flaws in your app that you never knew about. Bringing these flaws to light at an early stage in the development process of the app is crucial as they are easier to address. Even if the flaw is so troublesome that you will have a hard time fixing it, it’s better to know about it early on.
