Yesterday we were reporting that Gartner, information technology research and advisory firm headquartered in Stamford that delivers technology research to global technology business leaders to make informed decisions on key initiatives, expects to see a significant increase of Windows 7 usage. Garner said that it expects the Windows 7 operating system to power 42% of all PCs in the world and 94% of all new PCs by the end of the year. Gartner also said that it expects some 635 million new PCs to be sold worldwide by the end of the year.
That’s all very fine for Redmond-based software giant Microsoft and its Windows 7 operating system. But what about Microsoft’s rival, Cupertino-based software developer Apple and its Mac OS? Gartner said it expects Mac OS usage to increase as well.
Back in 2010 Mac OS was shipped on 4% of new computers around the world. Gartner expects 4.5% of new computers to ship with Mac OS this year and 5.2% next year, in 2012. The Mac OS-powered computers will be bought by consumers in mature markets, consumers who want to enter the Apple product ecosystem.
“The adoption of Mac PCs and Mac OS is a result of Apple's ability to grow well above the market average in the last 12 to 24 months, thanks to its ease of use from the user interface (UI) point of view and ease of integration with other Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and the existing Apple ecosystem of applications and programs,” explained Research Director with Gartner, Annette Jump.
North America and Western Europe are the regions with the highest Mac OS presence. According to Gartner Mac OS share varies greately by region the fastest growth is expected to happen in selected emerging countries where there is currently a small userbase.
