AVG LinkScanner: Real-time Online Protection for Free
AVG Technologies, the privately held Czech company that specializes in providing security software solutions and is best known for its free anti-virus software, has recently announced the release of AVG LinkScanner, a free standalone product for Windows users. The software, which much like Sophos’ Klingon Anti-virus will not interfere with the user’s currently installed security solution, will provide adequate protection against invisible online threats.
According to AVG, about 2 million web pages harbor hidden threats – and that is on a per day basis. The catch is that more than half of these invisible threats (about 60%) shut down or move to a different location – again, on a daily basis. The user’s online safety is thus crucial, and one way to achieve this is by providing said user with real-time link scanning technology. Keep in mind that all the user has to do is visit a poisoned web page in order to get infected; also keep in mind that regular anti-virus software, on its own, cannot protect the user from this kind of online threat.
What AVG LinkScanner does is it works alongside the user's currently installed security product in order to provide an extra layer of real-time protection. AVG LinkScanner analyzes web links in order to determine whether the web page that links leads to is harboring any threats – if the web page poses a danger to the user, LinkScanner simply pulls the plug on the download.
