Fresh off the release of Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu 8.10 Muslim Edition, the development team at Canonical Ltd has more good news for us – the first Alpha build of the next iteration of the Ubuntu operating system is here. Ubuntu 9.04, codename the Jaunty Jackalope, version Alpha 1 has been released as of this weekend. For those of you keeping track of things such as deadlines and release dates, the Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 1 was due to drop on the 20th of November, meaning that Canonical Ltd missed the release date by a couple of days.

Ubuntu fans all over the world can now download the operating system (a download location is provided at the bottom of the article) and put it through its paces, but keep in mind that this is an early Alpha build, and as is the case with such early and potentially unstable software versions, you are better off not downloading it unless you are willing to get some serious testing done. Download it, test it, and report the bugs you find, here.

“This is the very first roughly working set of images off the production line, and they haven't all been tested, so you should expect some bugs. Prominent among these are that some of the images are oversized and can only be tested using a DVD or a virtual machine, and that the desktop CD isn't ready yet! This release consists only of the alternate and server CDs; the desktop CD will follow in the next Alpha release,” says Collin Watson from the Ubuntu development team.

The next time we’ll hear from Ubuntu 9.04 the Jaunty Jackalope will be in mid-December – the second Alpha is due to drop on the 18th. According to Canonical Ltd the development process will include a total of 6 Alphas, just one Beta and one RC (Release Candidate), and a final version on the 23rd of April 2009.

More details about the brand new Alpha build of Ubuntu 9.04 as well as several download locations are available here: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 1, Kubuntu 9.04 Alpha 1, Xubuntu 9.04 Alpha 1, and Ubuntu-Studio 9.04 Alpha 1. Mirror download locations are available here.

In the meantime perhaps you would appreciate a few simple tips on how to improve your Ubuntu 8.10 operating system.
