The Galaxy S4, the Samsung-developed smartphone that sold 10 million units in one month, managed to receive a TCO Certification. This is the first smartphone in the world to be TCO Certified.

For more than 20 years now, TCO Development has been pioneering and advancing sustainable IT. The company’s aim is to ensure that the manufacturing, use, and recycling of IT products are carried out with regard to environmental, social, and economic responsibility. Products that meet these requirements are recognized by receiving a TCO Certification from the Sweden-based company.

Back in April, the company announced that it is planning on introducing a certification for smartphones. TCO Development explained that since smartphones are very similar to PCs in terms of power and functionality, and since smartphones represent the fastest growing of all IT product categories, it’s only logical that the next step in advancing sustainable IT is to start certifying smartphones. By certifying smartphones, higher sustainability demands are placed on the market; and it makes it easier for buyers to choose sustainably designed devices.

As of this month, smartphone certification became a reality. And the first smartphone in the world to be TCO Certified is Samsung’s Galaxy S4 smartphone.

“The demand for environmentally friendly products informed our decision making process when we were creating the GALAXY S4. We are delighted to be the first smartphone manufacturer to be TCO Certified as this validates our approach to sustainability,” said JK Shin, CEO & President, IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “This is the second significant certificate the GALAXY S4 has received since its release as we were also awarded Platinum ECOLOGO certification from UL. Our customers can trust that every device we release to the market is sustainable and environmentally friendly.”

"TCO Certified Smartphones are designed to make it easier for smartphone buyers to choose products that have been designed with sustainability in mind. By certifying their smartphones, leading brands such as Samsung have a real opportunity to demonstrate that their products are helping advance more sustainable mobile solutions," said Soren Enholm, CEO TCO Development.
