Here are a few Android goodies you may want to know about.

Opera Software just rolled out Opera 20 for Android (and Opera 20 for the desktop).
Adobe made Adobe Revel, its photo editing and sharing app, available for Android.
Samsung introduced WatchON, an app that lets you control your TV, check what’s on TV, and more.
Malwarebytes updated its free mobile security app for Android; it now provides protection against PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs).

Opera Software 20 – Chat Without an App

The Opera browser for Android has recently been updated to version 20 – get it for free from Google’s Play Store.

The browser comes with a fresh look for the Speed Dial, lets phone and tablet users choose how to set up the browser navigation bars, features an upgraded search and address bar, and comes with support for WebRTC, the standard for real time communication on the web.

This means that Opera 20 for Android does not need an app to be able to offer video chat functionality. You can visit a website and start a video call with anyone who has a WebRTC-compatible browser. If you visit appear.in you can get an address for a video conference and then share it with others. Share it with the people you want to chat with.

“The web is the ultimate meeting place for all forms of communication, so why not build video communication capabilities right into the mobile browser?” says Peter Wallman, SVP of Mobile Products at Opera Software. “We have worked with the folks at appear.in before, and their site is a very neat example of how to combine cutting-edge web technologies into a useful service that is free and simple to use, yet powerful.”

Adobe Revel – Now Available for Android

The iOS version was rolled out to the public back in 2011. It’s now three years later and Adobe has finally made Adobe Revel available for Android. Get it for free from the Play Store and use it to edit and share photos and videos.

Adobe Revel Main features
  • Create a Group Library and invite others to join.
  • Keep photos and videos organized by creating albums.
  • Edit photos.
  • Share photos and videos on social networks.
  • Share albums with others.

WatchON – A Must-have for TV Viewers

At the Mobile World Congress, Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy S5 and several wearable devices. Samsung also unveiled an app called WatchON, an app that is a definite must-have for TV viewers.

WatchON Main Features
  • Access a TV guide and find out what’s on TV.
  • Get recommendations for TV programs. The recommendations are based on your history and watching behavior.
  • Use the app as a remote for your TV and home theater system.
  • Never miss anything. When you have to go away from the TV, you can keep watching on your phone or tablet.

Malwarebytes – Protection Against PUPs

Malwarebytes recently updated Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Mobile, the free Android app that protects against malware, infected apps, and unauthorized surveillance. The updated version, available for download on the Play Store here, introduces protection against Potentially Unwanted Programs – PUPs for short.

“We have decided to give our users the option of protecting themselves against the rising number of Android apps which cannot be officially classified as malware, but sit in a legal gray area. Not only are these pieces of software annoying and needlessly expensive, but they can end up seeing personal data put to dubious use,” said Marcin Kleczynski, CEO at Malwarebytes.
