If you like the brand new Yahoo! Mail Beta so much that you can’t stop thinking about it, Yahoo! has a nice surprise for you: the brand new Yahoo! Mail Beta wallpapers. The wallpapers have been created by Yahoo! Southeast Asia, because Yahoo! Mail is incredibly popular in Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

“Now that Yahoo! Mail Beta is live, we at Yahoo! Southeast Asia thought we would try to add one little cherry on top. After knocking around a few ideas with our crack UED team, designers of sights like Yahoo! OMG Indonesia and Yahoo! Movies Singapore, we decided that users in Southeast Asia and around the world might like a few wallpapers to trick-out their PC desktop with the same styles that we used to redesign Yahoo! Mail Beta,” commented Product Marketing Manager with Yahoo! Southeast Asia, Isaac Souweine.

The brand new Yahoo! Mail Beta was announced back in September. At the time Yahoo! said it would roll out a new Yahoo! Mail version that would be faster, cleaner and safer than any other previous version. Yahoo! Mail Beta was actually released to the public by the end of October; it brought with it the following:
  • New user interface – Yahoo! Mail Beta has a cleaner, sleeker interface that focuses on speed - helping you navigate faster and more rapidly access the features you need. You will be able to see the new interface regardless if you access Yahoo! Mail Beta from your desktop PC, from a mobile device, or from a tablet device.
  • Speed – Yahoo! has re-architected several core Yahoo! Mail features. By doing so Yahoo! made Yahoo! Mail Beta faster – lighting fast is the word that Kakul Srivastava used. “It’s at least twice as fast as previous Yahoo! Mail versions, and significantly faster in key geographies,” she said.
  • Spam protection – Back in May we were reporting that according to a Fraunhofer Institute study, Yahoo! Mail fights spam harder, smarter and better. The Fraunhofer Institute found that Yahoo! Mail users saw 40% less spam than Hotmail users and 55% less spam than Gmail users during its research. Yahoo! Mail Beta uses Hadoop technology to offer even better protection against spam.
  • Connectivity – From within Yahoo! Mail Beta you are able to view and update your Facebook and Twitter pages, check out photos and videos from Flickr, Picasa, and YouTube when someone sends you a link from these sites, or send out an SMS to one of your buddies. Furthermore, you can use Yahoo! Mail Beta on a variety of devices – on your desktop computer, on your laptop, on your iPhone, on your iPad, or on your Android-powered device.
  • Searching – Since Yahoo! Mail offers unlimited storage space, the introduction of a simple yet powerful search feature was imperative. Yahoo! Mail Beta lets you easily and rapidly locate the messages your are looking for via its new search interface.

That’s not all – after users put Yahoo! Mail Beta to the test, they provided feedback and asked for some changes. Complying to user feedback, Yahoo! said it would make the following changes:
  • Unread messages – An update has been released and now the unread messages count includes unread messages in the Trash and Spam folders.
  • Browser support – Chrome 6 and Internet Explorer 9 users will be able to use Yahoo! Mail Beta as access to the service will no longer be blocked for these browsers. Yahoo! Mail Beta already provides support for IE8, Firefox 3.X, Safari 4 and 5; support for various other browsers will be added in the future.
  • Calendar – A link to Calendar will be added, as requested by numerous Yahoo! Mail Beta users.
  • User interface – If purple is not to your liking, several color options and themes will become available in the near future. If you want more room to read and compose messages, the UI will be tweaked and will provide more options so you have more room. Expect this change to be rolled out in the “next few months.”
