Remember the Weave Sync add-on that was rebranded as Firefox Sync as soon as it reached version 1.3? You know, the add-on that was a released as a stable 1.0 version back in January, the add-on that keeps your bookmarks, saved passwords, preferences, browsing history and open browser tabs in sync across platforms.

I have to say I was a big fan of Weave sync – now Firefox Sync – since the beginning. If I bookmarked a site on my work computer, the same bookmark would show up in the bookmarks list on my home computer. If I saved a password at home, it would be available on my work computer. It gives me great pleasure to announce that Mozilla, now that Firefox Sync graduated out of Mozilla labs, decided to include Firefox Sync in the next major Firefox release.

“We are excited to announce that the “Weave Sync” project from Mozilla Labs has officially graduated and is now being incorporated into the Firefox roadmap. “Weave Sync” is now named “Firefox Sync” and the service will become a feature of Firefox in an upcoming major release. For those of you that tested Sync and gave feedback while it was a part of Mozilla Labs, thank you, this would not have happened without you. And even though this project has graduated, we are still looking for your feedback and involvement as we incorporate Sync into Firefox,” said Ragavan Srinivasan on behalf of the Mozilla Labs team.

While we wait for the next major Firefox release to become available, you can put Firefox Sync to the test by downloading the app from AMO here. Please note that you will need to install the add-on an all the devices you use Firefox on – your work computer, you home computer, and so on.

In related news, Mozilla recently announced it is working on a Firefox Sync-based application for the iPhone – called Firefox Home, this application will give “iPhone users instant access to their Firefox browsing history, bookmarks and the set of tabs from their most recent browser session.” The app is scheduled to be submitted to the App Store mid June.
