Back in January we were quite happy to announce that Weave Sync, the add-on that encrypts and securely syncs your Firefox experience across browsers, has been released as a final, stable version – Weave Sync v. 1.0 to be more precise. The add-on has now reached version 1.3, and with this latest release came an interesting change. Weave Sync is now called Firefox Sync.

With Weave Sync you can keep your bookmarks, saved passwords, preferences, browsing history and open browser tabs in sync. For example if you bookmarked a webpage while using Firefox on your work computer, that bookmark will be added to the bookmarks list on your home computer.

Using Weave Sync is a pretty straightforward process. You need only download the add-on (check the link at the bottom), set up a profile (which is incredibly simple and fast), and play with the add-ons settings a bit (if you want to). Please note that you will need to install the add-on an all the devices you use Firefox on – your work computer, you home computer, and so on.

For the time being Firefox will keep only your bookmarks, saved passwords, preferences, browsing history and open browser tabs in sync. In the future Weave will be able to sync your browser add-ons, search plugins and other customizations. As Mozilla explained, Weave will eventually be able to sync everything that makes your Firefox and Web experience personal.

The Firefox Sync add-on is available for download here (release notes for version 1.3 available here).

Moving on, Mozilla recently announced it is working on a Firefox Sync-based application for the iPhone called Firefox Home – because it is “your home on the Web.” As Mozilla explained, the app will give “iPhone users instant access to their Firefox browsing history, bookmarks and the set of tabs from their most recent browser session.” The app is scheduled to be submitted to the App Store mid June.
