All the extra features and functions aside, a smartphone’s main purpose is to make calls. Sure, you can use it to watch YouTube videos, play all sort of games, socialize with people on Facebook, and more. But the thing you must always be able to do is make calls.

Samsung’s new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, via a feature called Quick Dial, make it incredibly easy to make calls – even if you’re wearing gloves. And no, I don’t mean those special gloves that work with touchscreens. I’m talking about the regular type of gloves, the ones that you have to take off if you want to use your phone’s touchscreen.

How to enable the Quick Dial feature

Step 1. Open the Settings menu and tap on Advanced features.

Step 2. Next, tap on Galaxy Labs.

Step 3. Now tap on Quick Dial.

Step 4. Toggle Quick Dial to On.

How the Quick Dial feature works

To access the Quick Dial feature you must long press the home button. This works from any screen and it even works when the display is off. And since the home button is physical, you can press it even when you’re wearing gloves. You don’t have to take them off to long press the button and launch Quick Dial, but you will have to take them off if your phone is locked with a fingerprint though.

When Quick Dial launches, you’ll be asked to speak the name of the person you want to call. So if you want to call Emily, just say "Emily" or “Call Emily” and even “Dial Emily.”

“Unlike conventional voice recognition systems, which send spoken commands to servers for processing, Quick Dial uses hybrid processing via servers, as well as the device itself. As such, the system is able to make a call within three seconds of receiving a voice command,” Samsung explained.

“The feature also uses machine learning. That means it becomes more familiar with your voice and calling habits over time, thus improving in functionality the more often you use it,” Samsung added.
