What’s the defining characteristic that draws you to a certain phone? For people who care about looks, it’s the design. For those who care about productivity, it’s the ease of use. And for gamers, its… well, it’s a bit more complicated.

A combination of factors is needed for a good smartphone to be great for gaming. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, I’m glad to say, ticks all the boxes. Here are the 7 features that make these two smartphones perfect for playing games.

1. Large AMOLED display

If you’re going to play games on your smartphone, you’re going to want a large display. The Galaxy S7 features a large 5.1-inch quad HD Super AMOLED display and the S7 Edge features an even larger 5.5-inch display.

You must know that the S7 and S7 Edge have a new Always-On Display that presents the time, notifications and other useful information on the screen, even if said screen is turned off.

2. Powerful processor (and plenty of RAM)

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge feature a 64-bit octa-core (2.3GHz Quad + 1.6GHz Quad) processor. The Exynos 8 Octa, Samsung’s 2nd generation premium mobile processor on 14nm FinFET technology, which has been designed to deliver unparalleled performance and power efficiency.

On top of that, the smartphones come with 4GB of RAM. That should be enough for even the most demanding and intense games.

3. Efficient cooling system

When you have a processor that’s 30% more powerful and a GPU that’s 60% faster, you worry about overheating issues. To make sure the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge stay cool, Samsung fitted them with a very thin thermal spreader cooling system.

"We adopted a spreader that is only 0.4mm in diameter, making it the thinnest in the market today," Samsung explained. "Unlike the conventional thermal spread sheet technology, the thermal spreader uses changes in the phases of water to radiate heat. It has a porous structure on the inside where water absorbs heat, turns into steam and moves through pipes. After losing heat, the steam liquefies, and turns back into water in the structure. This continuous cycle dispels heat. Generally, its thermal conductivity is more than 50 times higher than that of copper. The entire process happens inside the small space that is only 0.2mm wide."

4. Large capacity battery

The large display, the powerful CPU and GPU, the fact that you’re playing a resource-hungry game, all these will drain your phone’s battery. To make sure that you can play for longer, Samsung fitted the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge with larger batteries.

The Galaxy S7 comes with a 3,000mAH battery while the S7 Edge comes with a 3,600mAH battery. Both are compatible with fast charging and wireless charging.

5. Vulkan next gen graphics API

And speaking about playing games for longer, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are the first phones to feature the Vulkan API. It boosts gaming efficiency and lets you play graphics-intensive games for a lengthier period of time.

“With Vulkan’s focus on handling 3D graphics and games, it helps deliver higher performance while distributing the workload among multiple CPUs. In short, you can play all your favorite graphics-intensive games for even longer,” Samsung explained.

6. The new Game Launcher app

Samsung developed the new Game Launcher app with gamers in mind. It can be used for additional power saving, to take screenshots, to turn off alerts that would disturb your gaming, and more.

7. Game Pads

Honorable mention – Galaxy Game Pack

Purchase a Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge and Samsung will reward you with a Galaxy Game Pack worth $200.

“To show its commitment to offering the very best and most dynamic mobile gaming experience, Samsung took things one step further by giving Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge owners access to the Galaxy Game Pack, an exclusive package offering unique and exclusive in-game benefits,” said Samsung. “Packed with loads of some of the world’s most loved games from companies such as EA, Blizzard, Gameloft and KABAM, the package is worth over $200 US in value. All benefits are available via Samsung’s Galaxy App Store.”
