While Google was busy introducing the new Inbox by Gmail app, Facebook was busy introducing Rooms, a Facebook Creative Labs app that lets you create rooms for the things you like. If you like pugs for example, create a room about pugs and invite other pug lovers to join the room.

Rooms is available for iOS in the US, UK, and a few other English speaking countries. You can get it for free from Apple’s App Store.

Rooms by Facebook – Main Features
  • Create a room – you can create a room for any topic that interests you. A room is a feed of photos, videos, as well as text.
  • Customize and control your room – Facebook designed Rooms as a flexible creative tool. Consequently, you can control almost every aspect of your room. You can add a cover photo, customize member permissions, change the text, and more. Facebook explained that it will continue to add more customizable features and ways to tweak rooms.
  • Use any nickname you want – you can use a nickname when you’re in a room and you can use different nicknames for different rooms. Facebook invites you to liberate yourself from your daily self and become whoever you want to be. You are free to pick any nickname you want.

Rooms is the latest app to come out of Facebook Creative Labs, the place where Facebook crafts new apps to support the diverse ways people want to connect and share. I remind you that the first product from Facebook Creative Labs is Paper, and app that helps you explore and share stories from friends and the world around you. Just like Rooms, Paper is available for free on Apple’s App Store.

In related news, I remind you that Facebook recently introduced Safety Check, a tool that I hope you will never have to use. You see, this tool is meant to be used in case of a disaster or calamity to let others know you’re safe.
