The old school way of using Skype goes something like this. Step 1, download & install the Skype app on your desktop or mobile device. Step 2, sign up and log into your account. And step 3, connect with anyone you want.

It’s now possible to skip steps 1 and 2. Don’t want to install Skype on any of your devices, you don’t have to. You can use Skype for Web, the web version of Skype that works in your browser. Don’t want to sign into your account? You don’t have to, because Microsoft is now letting you use Skype for Web as a Guest. Here’s a quick look at how we got to this point.

Microsoft introduces Skype for Web

Back in June 2015, Microsoft rolled out a new version of Skype, one that works within your browser: the aptly named Skype for Web. By accessing the web app and signing into your account, you could access Skype’s familiar interface and use it to call and chat with friends and family.

Skype lets you invite anyone to join a conversation

In November 2015 and March 2016, Microsoft introduced the option to invite anyone to join a Skype conversation, including people who don’t have a Skype account, just by sending them a unique link. Skype for desktop got this feature in November 2015, Skype for Web got it in March 2016.

Join Skype as a Guest, no registration required

As of Monday, November 14, 2016, you can connect with anyone on Skype, without having to download anything and without having to register for an account. You can simply use Skype for Web as a Guest.

"By joining Skype as a Guest, you can quickly chat, voice or video call without any hassle. Perfect if you’re new to Skype and want to quickly chat with someone, anywhere in the world, for free,” announced the Skype Team.

"To get started, go to Skype.com, tap start a conversation and add your name. You will then be provided with a unique conversation link. You can share this link with your contacts—either individually or as a group—via email or via your social networks. Once they click on the link, they’ll be able to join your conversation immediately. They can also join as a Guest if they’re using Skype for Web."

Using Skype as a Guest doesn’t mean you have to give up on Skype’s best free features, like one to one and group instant messaging, voice and video calls, screen sharing, or file sharing. But you will give up on the option to return to your conversation later. When using Skype as a Guest, your conversations don’t last for longer than 24 hours.

Facebook does this too

Mid-2015, Facebook updated its Messenger app, allowing people to sign up without an account. More details here.
