There are smartphones, smartwatches, smart lightbulbs, smart lighters, and even smart bottles. Thinfilm, in collaboration with Diageo, came up with a connected smart bottle. The prototype, a Johnnie Walker Blue Label bottle, will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Spain.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) will take place in Barcelona from March 2nd until March 5th, 2015.

Who came up with this smart bottle?

The two companies that developed the smart bottle are Thinfilm and Diageo.

Thin Film Electronics ASA is a global leader in the development of printed electronics and smart systems. Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, Thinfilm is the only public company focused solely on printed electronics. The company’s vision is to bring electronics to even the most cost-sensitive applications.

Diageo Plc is a global leader in beverage alcohol with an outstanding collection of brands across spirits, beer and wine categories. Every year, Diageo produces more than 6.5 billion liters of its brands, from more than 100 sites in 30 countries.

What does the smart bottle do?

Thinfilm and Diageo created a prototype Johnnie Walker Blue Label smart bottle. Thinfilm put extremely thin, electronic sensors on the bottle. These printed sensor tags can detect if the bottle is sealed or open. Use a smartphone to read these tags and you will get personalized messages from Diageo, like cocktail recipes or promotional offers for example.

Here’s a scenario. Scan the bottle while it is still in the shop to get promotional offers. Purchase the bottle, get home, open it, and cocktail recipes show up on your smartphone.

The printed sensors use Thinfilm’s OpenSenseTM technology. They communicate with a smartphone by using NFC (Near Field Communication). The sensor tags remain readable even when the factory seal has been broken. The sensor tags can track the bottle though the supply chain.

“We constantly experiment with the latest cutting edge technologies to enrich and enhance the experiences delivered by our iconic brands. Our collaboration with Thinfilm allows us to explore all the amazing new possibilities enabled by smart-bottles for consumers, retailers and our own business, and it sets the bar for technology innovation in the drinks industry,” said Helen Michels, Global Innovation Director, Futures Team at Diageo.
