Here’s some interesting news from BitTorrent, the San Francisco-based company that is responsible for the ongoing development of the BitTorrent peer-to-peer protocol and the uTorrent and BitTorrent applications.

The news is that BitTorrent plans to produce and distribute original shows. In partnership with Rapid Eye Studios, BitTorrent will find, produce and distribute original video content. The whole thing will be known as BitTorrent Originals.

BitTorrent Originals video content will debut on the existing BitTorrent Bundle platform, for an exclusive window of 30 to 60 days. After that, the original video content will be rolled out to other distribution channels. Interesting stories that appeal to the BitTorrent audience of 170 million monthly active users, users between 14 and 25 years old, will be taken into consideration for BitTorrent Originals. The creators of the original video content will get a 90 percent cut of the profits.

Here’s what BitTorrent CEO Eric Klinker has to say about the BitTorrent Originals deal:

“This landmark deal with Marco [Weber, Rapid Eye Studios CEO] is a major milestone for us and an aggressive expansion into the media space for BitTorrent, Inc. In the last two years, we’ve become a trusted and valid channel for creators and publishers to reach a monthly global audience of 170 million fans directly. Expanding into the world of original content is a move that makes us a serious player in the media business, and takes us another step closer toward our goal: creating a sustainable digital future for creators of all kinds.”

And here’s a quote from Rapid Eye Studios CEO Marco Weber:

“I found it fascinating to watch how BitTorrent has grown into an enormous creative community over the course of the last few years. “Today they reach more than 170 million people; young, social, influential, and tech-savvy. It became obvious to me that original content would add a tremendous amount of value and engagement to the growing BitTorrent Bundle platform.”

In related news, Oculus recently announced that it plans to produce virtual reality movies and Amazon announced that it plans to produce original movies for theaters.
