150 Million Windows 7 Licenses on 12% of the World's Computers
Compared to Windows Vista, the latest iteration of the Microsoft-developed operating system, mainly Windows 7, has turned out to be a huge success. The sales figures are proof of just how popular Windows 7 is. Redmond-based software giant Microsoft recently announced that to-date it sold more than 150 million Windows 7 licenses.
“We are excited to announce that Windows 7 has sold 150 million licenses to-date,” announced Windows Communications Manager on the Windows Client Communications Team, Brandon LeBlanc.
For those of you keeping track, Microsoft announced back in January that it sold more than 60 million Windows 7 licenses (and made a profit of $6.66 billion, which some have called devilishly high). Then in March, Microsoft announced that the number of Windows 7 licenses it sold went up and over the 90 million mark. Then in April, precisely 6 months after the launch of Windows 7, Microsoft announced that it sold more than 100 million Windows licenses.
The fact that the number of sold Windows 7 licenses has now surpassed the 150 million mark just stands to prove that Craig Beilinson, Director of Marketing with Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division, wasn’t talking nonsense when he said that Windows 7 is the fastest selling operating system in history.
Just to put things in perspective, 7 copies of Windows 7 have been sold every second ever since the operating system was rolled out to the public. According to Net Applications more than 12% of all the computers in the world are now powered by Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system.
In related news, longtime Microsoft rival, Cupertino-based software developer Apple recently announced it is doing well in the sales department as well. Apple announced that it sold more than 300 million iPads since the device was rolled out. The iPad was released on the 3rd of April, meaning that Apple sold 300 million iPads on just 80 days.
