Version 3.0 of the Google developed Chrome browser has moved out of the dev channel; then for a while it stayed in the Beta channel and as of this week it is available for download as a final stable software application for all the Windows users out there. The month of September turns out to be an important one for Google Chrome: first there was the 1 year anniversary and now the release of Chrome 3.0.195.21 for Windows.
As a little trivia side note, over the course of one year, Google rolled out:
51 Chrome updates on the dev channel
21 Beta updates on the Beta channel obviously
15 Stable updates
Fixes for a total of 3,505 bugs
Here are the top 3 reasons why you should upgrade to Google Chrome 3.0
1. Speed
The one thing that Google always boasted about is how fast Chrome is, how faster its V8 JavaScript engine is compared to other browsers. Let’s leave other browsers aside for a moment. According to Program Manager Anthony Laforge, the JavaScript engine has improved considerably – compare to “our very first Beta” V8 has improved 150% and compared to “the most recent stable release” it has improved by 25%.
Since they say that a picture is worth a thousand words, here are some images that demonstrate this improvement.
2. Themes
When Chrome was still on the dev and Beta channel, Google announced that it launched a Themes Gallery for the browser. At the time, the fact that the regular user was probably not on the Beta channel and definitely not on the dev channel was a problem. Now that Chrome 3.0 final is out there, the problem has been solved.
You can get a theme for Chrome 3.0.195.21 (and above) by visiting the official Themes Gallery webpage here.
3. Better Omnibox, more HTML5 Capabilities
The Omnibox serves several a dual purposes: on one hand it is a web address bar, on the other it is a search bar. With Chrome 3.0.195.21, the Omnibox comes with an optimized presentation of the dropdown menu, and different icons for bookmarks, searches, suggested sites, browsing history sites.
The HTML5 capabilities included in Chrome have been enhanced with Chrome 3.0 Final. Anthony Laforge comments: “We're particularly excited about the <video> tag in HTML5, which makes embedding videos in a page as simple as embedding regular images. The <video> tag also allows video playback without a plug-in.”
