Sporting Good News from Yahoo! and Google
The two search engine providers are addressing our need to keep up-to-date with what is going on in the sports world. Starting with Yahoo!, the Santa Clara-based company is making it incredibly easy for the user to follow his favorite professional and/or college sports team. How is Yahoo! doing this? By adding a new shortcut to its search results.
Senior Product Manager with Yahoo! Search, Yuko Kamae, explains: “Starting today, when you search for your favorite major league or college sports team on Yahoo! Search, a new shortcut appears with the real time score, the last game’s score, and the date and time of the next game. You’ll also find quick links to the team’s page, as well as news, scores, schedules, stats, and photos. Instead of having to click through search results a couple of times a day, you can use the shortcut to follow tonight’s pivotal game.”
To put it simply, when you enter the terms “Los Angeles Lakers” or “New York Yankees” for example, at the top of the search results, you will see a Google OneBox-like shortcut with the score of the latest game and when the next game will take place. Just check out the images below to get a better clue.
Before you do that, just remember that the Yahoo! sports shortcut covers the NFL, MLB, NHL, and NBA, and college sports leagues including the NCAAF and NCAAB.
Speaking of OneBox results, Google has introduced a new one that should put a big smile on the faces of tennis fans – when you enter the keywords “roland garros” or “tennis” into Google search, you will get an OneBox result with the latest result from the Roland Garros European tennis tournament. Alternatively you might want to enter a player’s name and see how he’s fairing up in the competition. Screenshots available below.
