Intel says that its new Android app, Intel Remote Keyboard, was designed for the NUC miniature PC and the Compute Stick device. Makes sense, since these small devices don’t ship with peripherals.

But the truth of the matter is that you can use Intel Remote Keyboard to remotely control any PC that runs Microsoft’s Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system.

Over the weekend, Intel quietly rolled out a free Android app that can be used to remotely control a NUC miniature PC or a regular PC powered by Windows 7 or 8. The app also plays nice with Intel’s Compute Stick, the device that turns a TV or monitor into a fully functional computer.

Intel Remote Keyboard – Main Features
  • Simple setup – install the Remote Keyboard host app on your PC, install the Remote Keyboard app on your Android, and if both devices are connected to the same WiFi network, the mobile app will automatically detect the PC.
  • Keyboard and trackpad – the app features an onscreen keyboard and a trackpad. Tap with one finger to left click, tap with two fingers to right click, slide your finger to scroll up or down.
  • The Intel Remote Keyboard app works in both portrait and landscape mode.
  • Compatibility – the Remote Keyboard host app is compatible with 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows 8. The Remote Keyboard Android app is compatible with Android 4.0 and newer.
  • Availability – the host app is available for free on Intel’s Download Center. The Android app is available for free on Google Play.

Remote Keyboard is currently not available for Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. Intel said that it’s working on it and that an iOS version will be rolled out to the App Store in the near future.

If you want to remotely control your PC (or your Mac), I invite you to try Unified Remote. It’s available for Windows, OS X, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and more.
