Microsoft Lets You Try ReCore for Free (Probably Because of the Bad Reviews)

ReCore, the action-adventure title that launched last month, has all the ingredients to be a great game. It was developed by Comcept (studio founded by Mega Man producer and character designer Keiji Inafune) in collaboration with Armature Studio (founded by some of the key minds behind Metroid Prime).

The game’s hero is Joule Adams, who spent 200 years in cryo-sleep waiting for robots to terraform the desert planet of Far Eden. But something went wrong. The planet is now controlled by robots and many of the colonists vanished.

Alongside her trusty companion Mack, a K-9 corebot designed for cheerfulness and loyalty, Jole begins her adventure in the semi-open world of Far Eden, fighting robots, solving puzzles, collecting resources and working towards finding out what went wrong.

As an Xbox Play Anywhere title, the first Xbox Play anywhere title as a matter of fact, ReCore can be played on a Windows 10 PC and an Xbox One or One S console. Thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere, all your save games, achievements, and game add-ons are available on both platforms at no additional cost. You can keep the game going and easily switch between your PC and your console.

ReCore received some pretty bad reviews.

Ars Technica’s Sam Machkovech called it a half-baked adventure, saying that it "could’ve been great but arrives undercooked."

Digital Trends' Mike Epstein said ReCore "may be the most disappointing game of 2016," criticizing its repetitive combat, long load time, poor pacing, and the fact that the story doesn’t go anywhere.

And The Escapist’s Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw pretty much tore it a new one (as he’s known to do). The video below is slightly NSFW. Maybe more than slightly.

Who cares what others say?

I purposely focused on the worst things critics had to say about ReCore. The truth of the matter is that the game isn’t all bad. And even if the critics don’t like it, you might. You should make your own mind about this game and decide for yourself if it’s worth your time or not.

Especially now that you can try it for free.

Via Microsoft’s Xbox Wire, Senior Creative Director for ReCore Joseph Staten announced that "anyone who hasn’t yet had the opportunity to play ReCore can now experience their first 30 minutes of the game in a free trial version on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs."

If you don’t want to buy ReCore, you can try it for free for half an hour. If you decide you don’t like it, that’s fine. If you do like it and you decide to buy the game, you can you can pick up right where you left off. All your progress (and Achievements) from the trial will be reflected in the full game.
