Buying NordVPN

I purchased NordVPN in a typical way, starting by comparing the various plans they offer:

  • Basic: Only includes the VPN and support for 6 devices
  • Plus: Includes the Basic features, as well as malware protection, tracker and ad blocker, password manager, and data breach scanner
  • Complete: Includes the Plus features as well as 1 TB encrypted cloud storage
  • Ultra: Includes Complete features plus the Incogni personal data removal tool

All subscription models come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, and you can choose between monthly, yearly, or 2-year plans. The 2-year subscription offers the best value for money. I opted for the Ultra plan to test all available features.

The payment process was simple. I entered my personal details, chose my payment method (debit card), and also added a Dedicated IP as an extra feature offered during checkout. Once the purchase was successful, I was directed to a web page where I could download all the apps included in my subscription: NordVPN, NordLocker (the cloud storage app), NordPass (the password manager), and Incogni (the data removal tool).

I received two emails containing my invoice, installation instructions, and a link to the download page where I could begin installing all the apps. The process was effortless and user-friendly, making it easy even for those new to VPN services.

Installation

Installing NordVPN was a breeze. I downloaded the installer from the email link and began the installation process. It took less than a minute, and I only had one option when the installation was complete: to install the browser extension.

I also installed the other applications easily. NordPass is a browser extension that you can quickly install from the Chrome Web Store. NordLocker is a web-based application that requires you to create an account, which I did. I used this account to log into NordVPN as well.

As soon as I opened NordVPN, I was prompted to set up the VPN by choosing auto-connect options (on all networks or specific networks), enable the kill switch, and activate threat protection. This guided setup ensures that even new users can configure the VPN for optimal security right from the start.

One of the things I appreciate about NordVPN's interface is its customizability. The user interface is adjustable, allowing you to adjust it to your preferred window size. Moreover, you can choose between three themes: light, dark, or system default. This level of customization isn't something I've seen in many other VPN apps, and it's a nice touch for users who like to personalize their software.

Another user-friendly aspect is the language support. NordVPN offers 13 languages to choose from in the general settings, making it accessible to a wide range of users globally.

Overall, I found NordVPN's interface to be one of its strongest points. It's clean, easy to understand, and easy to navigate, even for VPN beginners. The balance between simplicity and functionality is just right, providing easy access to basic functions while still offering advanced features for more experienced users.

VPN Servers

NordVPN provides an extensive network of servers, which is one of its strongest assets. With over 6,000 VPN servers spread across 111 countries, NordVPN offers plenty of variety and choices for secure connections. Popular VPN providers like CyberGhost and Private Internet Access have a few more servers.

Navigating through these servers is made easy with the VPN tab under "more connection options". You can search for a connection type or country using the search bar, which is particularly helpful given the vast number of options available. Other features include pausing the connection, shutting it down, and reconnecting to it.

When you connect to a server, its location is visually represented on a world map with a green dot. You can also connect to different servers directly from the map by clicking on the blue dots. For most connection types (except Dedicated IP), NordVPN allows you to either connect to the fastest server automatically or choose a specific country.

NordVPN connection optionsThe connection options, including specialty servers

The first connection option you'll see is "Recent connection", which allows you to quickly reconnect to any of your three most recently used servers. The next category, "More connection options", is where you can really examine NordVPN's server offerings. Here, you can use the search bar to look for a specific connection option or use the drop-down menus of the three main categories: Specialty servers, Devices in Meshnet, and Countries.

In the countries list, you'll find servers in many locations that aren't typically included in your average VPN service. Connecting to a country is as simple as clicking on its name. Within seconds, you'll be connected to a server in that location. For countries with multiple servers or cities, you can choose a specific server by clicking the three dots that open a menu.

NordVPN country selectionNordVPN's extensive list of countries to connect to

The variety and number of servers NordVPN offers is impressive. During my testing, I found that this vast network contributed to consistent performance, as it was always easy to find a fast, less congested server. This is particularly beneficial for users looking to bypass geo-restrictions or those needing to connect from or to specific locations.

Dedicated IPs

NordVPN offers Dedicated IP addresses as an add-on feature for users who require a unique, static IP address. This is in addition to their standard VPN service that routes your traffic through shared servers.

A Dedicated IP from NordVPN provides several benefits:

  • Easier Access to Corporate Networks: If you need to access your company's network remotely, a Dedicated IP can help you bypass firewall restrictions and ensure a smooth, secure connection.
  • Bypassing CAPTCHAs: With a shared IP, you may encounter more CAPTCHAs as the IP is associated with multiple users. A Dedicated IP reduces the likelihood of facing CAPTCHAs, saving you time and effort.
  • Avoiding Blacklists: Shared IPs can sometimes be blacklisted due to the actions of other users. With a Dedicated IP, you have sole control over your online reputation, minimizing the risk of being blacklisted.

NordVPN's Dedicated IP service allows simultaneous use on up to two devices, providing flexibility for users who need to secure multiple devices. However, it's important to note that the two devices must use different OpenVPN protocols (UDP and TCP) to connect simultaneously. This ensures a stable and secure connection on both devices.

When purchasing a Dedicated IP from NordVPN, you can choose from several locations, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. This allows you to select an IP address that best suits your needs, whether for accessing geo-restricted content or maintaining a consistent online identity.

For my NordVPN review tests, I chose a dedicated IP from the United Kingdom. Setting up the Dedicated IP was very straightforward. Unlike some other VPN services (such as CyberGhost), there was no token that I needed to use to connect to the dedicated IP, which made the process much simpler. The connection was stable, and my location was not leaked while conducting DNS leak tests.

One thing to note is that there are no configuration options for the dedicated IP connection. You can only connect to the chosen location in the Dedicated IP menu from the VPN selection screen. While this simplicity might be appreciated by some users, others might prefer more control over their dedicated IP settings.

All in all, NordVPN's Dedicated IP feature is a valuable addition to their service, particularly for users who need a consistent IP address for work or other specific purposes.

Double VPN

Double VPN servers are a specialized feature aimed at users who require an extra layer of security, such as journalists and activists. This feature routes your traffic through two servers instead of one, effectively encrypting your data and hiding your IP address twice.

To use Double VPN, you simply need to select "Double VPN" in the NordVPN app under "Specialty servers". If you don't see this option, you might need to switch your protocol to TCP or UDP OpenVPN.

The primary advantage of Double VPN is the enhanced security it provides. By routing your traffic through two servers, it becomes significantly more difficult for anyone to trace your online activities back to you. This is especially useful in countries with high levels of censorship or surveillance.

However, it's worth noting that using Double VPN can result in slower speeds due to the extra server hop. For this reason, it's not recommended for daily use unless you have specific security concerns. If you do need to use Double VPN regularly, there are tips available to improve speed, such as choosing servers that are geographically close to each other.

In my tests for this NordVPN review, the Double VPN slowed down my connection somewhat, but the impact was less than I expected. For general browsing and even streaming, the connection remained quite usable. However, for activities requiring very high speeds, like gaming or large file downloads, you might want to stick with a single VPN connection.

Obfuscated Servers

Obfuscated servers are a powerful tool in NordVPN's arsenal, designed to disguise VPN use and allow access in restrictive areas. These servers work by altering data packets to evade VPN blocks, making your VPN traffic look like regular internet traffic.

Unlike regular VPN connections, which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can often detect due to distinctive data characteristics, obfuscated servers modify this data. This makes VPN traffic indistinguishable from normal traffic unless closely inspected.

Here's how obfuscated servers work:

  1. They strip VPN-related information from your data, making it appear as regular internet traffic.
  2. VPNs may use SSL/SSH encryption to hide VPN metadata or scramble data.
  3. This scrambled data is often masked as standard HTTPS traffic, allowing it to bypass VPN-blocking firewalls.
obfuscated serversThe obfuscated servers option provides a menu to choose a country.

During my testing, I found the obfuscated servers to be particularly useful when connecting from locations with heavy internet restrictions. While the connection speed was slightly slower compared to regular servers, the ability to bypass VPN blocks more than made up for it.

Onion Over VPN

Onion Over VPN is a specialized feature that combines the anonymity of the Tor network with the security of a VPN. This feature is particularly useful for users in regions with high monitoring or those who require an extra layer of privacy.

Here's how it works:

  1. Your traffic first goes through a NordVPN server.
  2. It then travels through the Tor network.
  3. Finally, it reaches the internet.

The advantage of this setup is that you get the benefits of Tor without needing to use the Tor browser. This means you can enjoy enhanced anonymity across all your applications, not just your web browsing.

To use Onion Over VPN, you simply need to connect to an Onion Over VPN server through the NordVPN app. No additional software is required, making it a convenient option for users who want the benefits of Tor without the technical setup.

In my NordVPN review tests, the Onion Over VPN feature was easy to use and effective at providing an extra layer of anonymity. However, as expected, the connection speeds were slower due to the multiple layers of routing. This feature is best suited for situations where privacy is more important than speed.

Torrenting / P2P

NordVPN provides specialized P2P servers optimized for high-speed file sharing without bandwidth limiting. These servers are designed to ensure users can transfer files efficiently and securely.

When you connect to a P2P server with NordVPN, your internet traffic is encrypted, safeguarding your data and maintaining privacy. This encryption prevents ISPs from monitoring your activities and potentially limiting your connection speed due to heavy data transfer.

To connect to a P2P server, simply browse the VPN list under specialty servers. Click the P2P option and connect to the fastest servers automatically. Alternatively, click the three dots to open a menu where you can choose a server from a specific country.

I've tested the speeds of the torrenting servers:

  • Fastest Servers (Romania): 331 Mbps download, 451 Mbps upload
  • USA: 232 Mbps download, 432 Mbps upload
  • Germany: 286 Mbps download, 440 Mbps upload

The speeds are good for P2P downloads, although the US server is not as fast as the European ones. I downloaded a free Ubuntu installer from a torrenting file while connected to the German torrenting server and it went smoothly. The speeds were close to the non-VPN speed I was having.

Overall, NordVPN's P2P support is reliable and efficient. The dedicated P2P servers provide a good balance of speed and security, making NordVPN a solid choice for those who frequently engage in file sharing.

Gaming

NordVPN proves to be an excellent choice for gamers who want to protect their online privacy and security without compromising on performance. To play games while being connected to NordVPN, I clicked "Quick connect" to automatically pick the best available VPN server for speed. While there are no dedicated servers for gaming like in some other VPN services, the automatic connections are excellent choices in terms of ping.

While playing Overwatch and LoL with NordVPN, I was able to connect to servers in various countries and consistently enjoy low and stable ping times. This allowed me to play fast-paced shooters with ease, without any noticeable lag or delays. The stable connection provided by NordVPN eliminated any concerns about sudden disconnects or ping spikes, allowing me to focus on my gameplay and maintain a competitive edge.

Moreover, NordVPN offers a range of other features that benefit gamers, such as DDoS protection, which helps prevent targeted attacks that could disrupt your gaming experience, and a strict no-logs policy that ensures your online gaming activities remain private.

In summary, NordVPN is a top-notch VPN service for gaming, offering low ping times, stable connections, and a range of security and privacy features that cater to the needs of gamers. Whether you're a casual player or a competitive gamer, NordVPN can help you enjoy a smooth, secure, and uninterrupted gaming experience.

Streaming

NordVPN excels in streaming performance, making it a great choice for accessing your favorite shows and movies. With its vast network of over 6,000 VPN servers spread across 111 countries, including key locations like the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, NordVPN ensures smooth streaming without buffering, even during peak usage times.

One of the standout features for streaming is NordVPN's NordLynx protocol. Based on the WireGuard protocol, NordLynx is designed to provide super-fast speeds while maintaining a secure and private connection. This makes it ideal for streaming high-quality content, even when you're traveling to another country.

NordVPN's SmartPlay feature is another asset for streamers. This smart DNS feature comes built into all NordVPN apps and allows you to securely access your favorite streaming sites and services without any extra setup. It works in the background, automatically routing your requests through the right servers to bypass restrictions and allow you to watch content from platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

In my tests, I successfully accessed content from Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Max. While NordVPN doesn't specifically unlock content libraries from particular countries, you can connect to local servers for secure and stable streaming without buffering.

It's worth noting that NordVPN states, "the NordVPN service should never be used to bypass copyright regulations. NordVPN does not promote, condone, or endorse the use of the service for such purposes. For more details, please read the NordVPN terms of service."

To conclude, NordVPN provides an excellent streaming experience, combining speed, security, and the ability to bypass geo-restrictions effectively.

No-Logs Policy

Independent auditors have confirmed the no-logs claims of NordVPN, which is a significant trust factor for users concerned about privacy. This means that NordVPN never logs any users' identifiable information as stated in its Privacy Policy.

The no-logs policy is crucial for maintaining user privacy. It ensures that even if NordVPN's servers were to be compromised or seized by authorities, there would be no user data to hand over. This policy covers all types of logs, including connection logs, activity logs, and metadata.

NordVPN's commitment to this policy is demonstrated through regular third-party audits. These audits, conducted by reputable firms, verify that NordVPN's systems and practices align with their no-logs claims.

During my use of NordVPN, I felt confident in the security of my data knowing that my online activities were not being recorded or stored. This level of privacy is especially important for users in countries with strict internet monitoring or for those handling sensitive information.

Transparency

NordVPN's transparency efforts set it apart from many other VPN providers, demonstrating the company's willingness to be open about its practices, address user concerns, and continuously improve its service.

Key aspects of NordVPN's transparency include:

  1. Independent Audits: NordVPN has undergone multiple independent audits to verify its security practices and no-logs policy. These audits, conducted by reputable firms like PricewaterhouseCoopers AG (PwC), confirm that NordVPN does not store user activity logs or connection logs.
  2. Warrant Canary: NordVPN maintains a warrant canary page on its website, which is regularly updated to inform users about any government requests for user data, gag orders, or warrants.

Anonymous Payment Options

NordVPN offers several anonymous payment options, including cryptocurrencies. This feature is particularly valuable for users who prioritize privacy and want to minimize their online presence when purchasing a VPN service.

The advantages of paying with cryptocurrency include:

  • Enhanced Privacy: Cryptocurrency transactions don't require personal information, making them more anonymous than traditional payment methods.
  • Security: Blockchain technology used in cryptocurrencies provides a secure method of transaction.
  • Global Accessibility: Cryptocurrencies can be used regardless of geographical location, which is beneficial for users in countries with restricted banking systems.

During my purchase, I noticed that NordVPN accepts a variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others. The process was simple and provided an additional layer of privacy to my VPN subscription.

Strong Encryption

NordVPN utilizes a combination of encryption protocols to ensure the security and privacy of its users' data. Here's a closer look at each of these protocols:

  • SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security): Used to establish a secure, encrypted connection between the user's device and the VPN server.
  • AES (Advanced Encryption Standard): NordVPN employs AES with a 256-bit key size (AES-256), which is considered highly secure and virtually impenetrable.
  • RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman): NordVPN uses RSA with a 4096-bit key size for the initial key exchange process between the client and the server.

These encryption protocols work together to provide a strong security framework, ensuring that your data remains confidential and protected from potential threats.

Kill Switch

The NordVPN kill switch is a crucial security feature designed to protect your online activities from being exposed during unexpected disconnections from the VPN server. If your VPN connection drops, the kill switch immediately blocks your device (or specific apps, depending on your settings) from accessing the internet.

NordVPN kill switch settingsThe kill switch configuration options can be tweaked in the Settings.

You can configure this feature in the Settings > Kill Switch. From there, you can enable/disable it and choose whether to disable internet access when a VPN connection drops unexpectedly or when you stop the VPN manually + connection drops unexpectedly.

An extra feature is the App Kill Switch: quit selected apps when not connected to the VPN. You can add apps to a list.

During my testing, the kill switch was highly effective and responsive. When I simulated a VPN disconnection, the kill switch immediately blocked my internet access, ensuring that my real IP address was not exposed.

DNS and IP Leak Protection

NordVPN provides strong DNS and IP leak protection to ensure that your online privacy is maintained while connected to their VPN service.

Based on the tests conducted using ipleak.net and perfect-privacy.com, NordVPN successfully passed the DNS and IP leak tests. These results indicate that NordVPN effectively masks your real IP address and prevents DNS leaks, ensuring that your online privacy is protected.

When connected to NordVPN, ipleak.net was unable to discover my real IP address or location, confirming that NordVPN's IP leak protection is working as intended. Similarly, the perfect-privacy.com tests verified that NordVPN's DNS leak protection is effective, and DNS queries are securely routed through NordVPN's servers.

Split Tunneling

NordVPN's Split Tunneling feature allows users to select which apps or websites use the VPN connection and which ones connect directly to the internet, bypassing the VPN. This functionality provides flexibility in how internet traffic is routed, offering a balance between security, privacy, and access.

NordVPN split tunneling settingsYou can enable or disable the split tunneling and choose its type in Settings > Split Tunneling.

You can configure this feature in the Settings > Split Tunneling window. You can enable/disable this feature and choose the apps for which you want to enable or disable split tunneling.

  • EICAR – NordVPN blocked 2/4 threats here
threat protection resultsNordVPN's threat protection blocking malicious websites

Overall, the Web Protection feature is highly effective at blocking potential threats, although it's not perfect and shouldn't be relied upon as the sole line of defense against online threats.

File Protection

Threat protection scans each file you download, checking for malware. It deletes malicious files immediately and notifies you about it.

NordVPN file protection settingsYou can enable cloud-based threat detection in the Threat Protection screen.

From the File Protection window, you can enable/disable cloud-based threat detection that provides an additional protection layer for detecting rare and unknown threats. If a file looks suspicious after the quick scan, NordVPN will upload it to the cloud for advanced threat detection. Note that this feature doesn't fully replace complex anti-malware programs like Norton or Bitdefender.

Vulnerability Detection

Utilize the app's vulnerability scanner to assess potential risks in your software. Through consistent scanning, you'll be kept up-to-date with emerging software vulnerabilities, encouraging timely app updates or cautious usage.

NordVPN vulnerability detectionThe vulnerability detection feature allows you to start a new vulnerability check on your computer.

There aren't many options for configuring this option. NordVPN automatically searches for outdated/vulnerable apps and you don't really have to do anything. You still have the option to manually check for updates from Threat Protection > Vulnerability detection if you want to.

File Transfers

The File Transfers feature allows you to transfer files securely and privately. The files you send go to the recipient directly over an encrypted peer-to-peer connection – your files won't be uploaded to any server or cloud. File transfers are done through the Meshnet feature.

NordVPN file transfer featureNordVPN's file transfer feature using Meshnet

Meshnet offers a simple way to share files with friends or family, supporting any file type and size globally. With a few clicks, share up to 1,000 files simultaneously, focusing on transfers from trusted sources to avoid malware. Your transfers are encrypted for privacy and rely on peer-to-peer technology, eliminating the need for central servers and ensuring that only you and your recipients can access the data.

During my tests, I found the file transfer feature to be easy to use and highly secure. The peer-to-peer nature of the transfers ensures that your files aren't stored on any third-party servers, which is a significant privacy advantage.

Meshnet

NordVPN's Meshnet is a type of virtual network that allows multiple devices to connect and communicate with one another directly, even when they are located in different parts of the world.

NordVPN Meshnet overviewNordVPN's Meshnet window lets you start sharing files, route traffic, or link devices.

Meshnet allows people to access resources and services on each other's devices for personal and business purposes. With end-to-end (E2E) encrypted connections and no middle server storage, Meshnet is fast, reliable, and secure.

The Meshnet window includes a slider to turn this feature on/off and under it there are three options:

  1. Share files: Transfer files between linked devices.
  2. Route traffic: Use another device's IP as if it were a VPN server.
  3. Link devices: Expand your private network to include up to 50 external devices.
NordVPN Meshnet device managementThe Meshnet device management options include linking devices.

During my NordVPN review testing, I found Meshnet to be a powerful and versatile feature. The ability to route traffic through other devices in your Meshnet is also a unique and valuable feature that sets NordVPN apart from many other VPN services.

The Dark Web Monitor is a technology that scans the internet for any credential leaks associated with your registered NordVPN e-mail address. In the case that any such leaks are found, you will be immediately notified by the NordVPN app.

Dark Web MonitorThe Dark Web Monitor feature sends alerts if your data is leaked online.

During my use of NordVPN, the Dark Web Monitor was a valuable additional security feature. While it didn't find any of my credentials during the testing period (which is good news), knowing that there's an extra layer of protection actively monitoring for potential leaks provided additional peace of mind.

Browser Extensions

NordVPN offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. These extensions act as a more streamlined version of the full VPN application, protecting against online surveillance by encrypting your browser's traffic and masking your IP address.

browser extensionThe browser extension interface is intuitive, allowing you to quickly connect to a server.

The NordVPN Chrome extension looks sleek and is highly intuitive. You can use it to quickly change servers or access key features directly from your browser.

You have options to pause, shut off, or reconnect to server, browse for servers, configure general settings, enable/disable split tunneling or kill switch, and change security and privacy options. I also like that you can see the country you're connected to in the extension's icon.

The browser extension is a convenient and lightweight alternative to the full app, especially when I only needed to protect my browser traffic. The extension performed well, providing quick access to VPN features without the need to open the full application.

NordVPN offers wide-ranging device compatibility, ensuring users can secure their internet connection across various platforms. Here's an overview:

  • Computers and Laptops: NordVPN supports major operating systems including Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  • Smartphones and Tablets: The service extends to mobile devices, with dedicated apps for Android and iOS (iPad and iPhone).
  • Routers: By configuring NordVPN on a router, users can secure all devices connected to their home network.

  • Extensions for Browsers: NordVPN offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.
  • Other Devices: With support for configuring VPN connections on devices like Raspberry Pi, NordVPN ensures even the more unique or less common devices can achieve greater security and privacy.

During my testing, I used NordVPN on Windows, Android, and iOS devices, as well as through the browser extension. In all cases, I found the experience to be consistent and user-friendly, with the core features available across all platforms.

NordVPN Review: Conclusion and Recommendations

NordVPN is a comprehensive VPN service and application that provides much more than a simple VPN connection. Depending on the subscription you choose, it can provide you with safe file transfers, web traffic monitoring, password management, and extensive cloud storage.

The VPN connection types are quite impressive in range, from specialty servers like Dedicated IP and Double VPN to obfuscated servers. With over 6,000 servers in over 111 countries around the world, NordVPN offers an extensive network that caters to a wide range of needs.

The download/upload speeds are very good as well. You won't have problems with streaming, downloading content, or gaming while using a NordVPN server, even those from remote corners of the world.

Here are some recommendations about the usage of NordVPN features:

  1. Meshnet: Utilize this feature for secure file sharing with friends and family, or to access your home network securely when traveling.
  2. VPN Servers: Experiment with different server types. Use Double VPN for extra security, obfuscated servers in restrictive countries, and Onion over VPN for enhanced privacy.
  3. Dedicated IPs: Consider this option if you frequently access IP-sensitive services or need to bypass CAPTCHAs regularly.
  4. Split Tunneling: Use this feature to route only specific apps through the VPN, which can be useful for balancing security and convenience.
  5. Kill Switch: Always keep this enabled to protect your data in case of unexpected VPN disconnections.
  6. File Transfers: Take advantage of the secure file transfer feature for sharing sensitive documents.

Overall, like its competitor ExpressVPN, NordVPN offers a robust, feature-rich service that caters to both beginners and advanced users. Its strong focus on privacy, impressive speeds, and additional security features make it a top contender in the VPN market.
