What Makes This Reve Antivirus Review Different?

You might be wondering, "Why should I trust your Reve Antivirus review?" Well, I'm not just repeating information from the product's website or rehashing other reviews. I've spent weeks hands-on with Reve Antivirus, testing every feature, running scans, and even intentionally exposing my test system to threats (don't try this at home!).

I used my trusty Dell XPS laptop running Windows 11 for this review. I've captured many screenshots to show you exactly what you can expect from Reve Antivirus. No concealing, no hidden agendas - just my honest experience and observations.

Buying Reve Antivirus

When I decided to test Reve Antivirus, I went for their most comprehensive package - Total Security Antivirus for PCs. They also offer two other versions: Antivirus and Internet Security, but these lack some advanced features like parental control and data theft protection.

Now, here's something interesting - Reve only accepts PayPal for payment. It's a bit unusual, but not a deal-breaker. However, what did surprise me was that I didn't receive my license key immediately after payment. I had to email their support team, provide additional purchase details, and then wait for them to send me the key and installation instructions. They apologized for the inconvenience, but it's definitely something to keep in mind if you're in a hurry to get started.

Installation

Once I had my license key, I downloaded the installer from the email they sent. It's a large 560 MB file, so make sure you have a good internet connection! The installation process was uncomplicated, with no options to choose from. Interestingly, it ran a virus check on my system during setup.

The whole process took about two minutes. At the end, I had to activate my subscription by entering my name, license key, email, country, and mobile number. It was a bit more information than I'm used to providing for antivirus activation, but I suppose it helps with customer support if needed.

Interface

When you first open Reve Antivirus, you're greeted by a modern, blue-dominated interface. It's clean and easy on the eyes, but I noticed there's no option to resize the window or choose different themes.

Reve Antivirus interfaceThe main interface of Reve Antivirus includes a home tab where you can see your security status and start a scan.

The top of the window has four main tabs: Home, Settings, My Account, and Help. The Home tab is where you'll find most of the action, with quick access to scans, updates, advanced features, and reports. It also displays how many days are left in your subscription, which is handy.

One thing I appreciated was the ability to set a master password and import/export your Reve antivirus settings. It's a small touch, but it can be really useful if you're setting up multiple devices.

Major Features

We’re about to explore Reve Antivirus in detail, highlighting its standout features and explaining why it might be ideal for securing your system.

Web Protection

Web protection is crucial in today's online world, so I was keen to see how Reve Antivirus performed. It uses the Windows firewall and includes safe browsing and anti-phishing features.

Web protection featuresThe web protection settings include activating the safe browsing and anti-phishing features.

To test its effectiveness for this Reve Antivirus review, I visited several known malicious websites. Here's how it performed:

  • WICAR: Blocked 11 out of 13 threats
  • AMTSO: Blocked 13 out of 15 threats
  • EICAR: Blocked 2 out of 4 threats

While these results aren't bad, they're not top-of-the-class either. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't catch all the threats, especially from well-known test sites like these.

Scan

Reve Antivirus offers several scanning options, accessible from the Home > Scan button. Let's take a closer look at each type.

Scan optionsThe scan options allow you to start a quick, full, scheduled, or custom scan.

Quick Scan

The quick scan checks for threats in running processes, critical Windows files, and other vulnerable areas. In my test, it took about 4 minutes to scan 4000 files and didn't detect any threats.

Quick scan resultsResults of a quick scan: 4006 file scanned in 4 minutes.

Full Scan

The full scan is more thorough, checking all types of files on your system. It took 35 minutes to scan 593,000 files on my system. Surprisingly, it didn't detect any threats, even though I had intentionally downloaded some test malware files.

Full scan in progressWhen finished, a full scan window displays elapsed time, total files scanned, and more.

During the scan, you can see real-time stats like elapsed time, scanning area, and the number of files scanned. You can also pause or stop the scan at any time, which is handy if you need to use your computer for something urgent.

Custom Scan

For more control, Reve offers a custom scan option. You can choose to scan for rootkits, boot sectors, registry entries, processes, cookies, and specific folders.

Custom scan optionsCustom scan configuration includes choosing a folder, boot sector, registry, process, and cookies.

Scheduled Scan

If you prefer to run scans automatically, you can set up scheduled scans. You can choose the frequency (daily or weekly), start time, scan type, and even the day of the week for the scan to begin.

Scan Settings

Reve Antivirus offers a variety of scan settings to customize your experience. You can toggle real-time scanning, smart scanning, packed file scanning, and more. There are also options for how to handle infected, suspected, and hidden files.

Scan settingsThe general scan settings include enabling the real time scanner, idle system scan, smart scan, and more.

Ransomware Protection

Ransomware is a growing threat, so I was pleased to see Reve Antivirus includes ransomware protection. You can access the settings via Settings > Anti Ransomware.

Ransomware protection settingsYou can configure the anti-ransomware shield in the Settings, too.

To test its effectiveness for this Reve Antivirus review, I used a ransomware simulator. Reve Antivirus successfully stopped 8 out of 22 ransomware simulation scenarios. While this is about average for antivirus software, I was hoping for better performance given the increasing prevalence of ransomware attacks.

Email Protection

Reve Antivirus includes email protection features to filter out spam and protect against phishing attempts. It creates a folder called 'ReveSpam' to isolate suspected spam emails.

The email protection features include:

  • Blacklist: Block specific email addresses
  • Whitelist: Always allow emails from specific addresses
  • Subject-based filtering: Block emails with specific subjects
  • Smart Spam: Automatically suggests blacklisting an address after 3 unread emails

You can also enable attachment scanning and email scanning, and choose the intensity of the scanning.

Firewall

Reve Antivirus includes a firewall to protect against network-based threats. However, it doesn't replace the Windows firewall but works alongside it.

Firewall settingsThere are two firewall general settings to configure: enabling port scan and stealth mode.

I tested the firewall using a popular online tool, and it passed - my equipment didn't respond to UPnP probes, which is good. However, I found the firewall features to be somewhat limited compared to some other antivirus solutions I've used, such as Bitdefender and McAfee.

Parental Control

For those with families, Reve Antivirus offers a parental control feature. It allows parents to monitor and control their children's online activities.

parental control dashboard

The parental control features include:

  • Category-based rules: Block or monitor 50 predefined categories of websites
  • Time-based rules: Set time limits for browsing
  • URL-based rules: Blacklist or whitelist specific websites
  • Instant notifications: Get alerts when someone visits a monitored or blocked site

To use parental controls, you need to sign in to your Reve online account, where you can manage all the settings.

PC Tuneup

Reve Antivirus includes a set of PC optimization tools, accessible via the Home > Advanced button. These tools aim to keep your computer running smoothly and remove unnecessary files.

PC tuneup optionsPC tuneup includes various optimization tools, such as shredder, duplicate finder, registry defragment, and more.

The tuneup utilities include:

  • Cleaner: Removes junk files, broken links, and registry errors
  • Startup optimizer: Manages programs that run at system startup
  • Disk defragmenter: Rearranges data on your drive for better performance
  • Shredder: Securely deletes files
  • Duplicate finder: Identifies and removes duplicate files
  • Data theft protection: Protects against unauthorized data copying
  • Vulnerability scanner: Identifies system weaknesses
  • Registry defragment: Optimizes the Windows registry
Cleaner optionsThe system cleaner tool allows you to clean your browser and set a cleaning schedule.

I found these tools to be quite useful during my Reve Antivirus review, especially the startup optimizer and vulnerability scanner. However, they're not as advanced as dedicated PC optimization software.

Data Backup

Reve Antivirus includes a data backup feature, which can be a valuable asset in case of data loss. You can access it from the main window's left sidebar.

Data backup interfaceData backup interface: you can see the file types, backup status, and more.

The backup feature allows you to safeguard your data on your PC and external hard drives. It supports all file formats and automatically backs up your Desktop, Downloads, and Documents folders after installation.

Data backup settingsIn the recovery interface, you can see details about the files you can recover.

You can choose how many versions of a file to back up, and whether to use local or external backup. The Recovery tab lets you easily recover or delete backed-up files.

Data recovery optionsThe recovery settings include choosing the location to back up files and the file type to back up.

While it's not as thorough as dedicated backup solutions, it's a nice addition to the antivirus package.

System Performance Impact

To test the system impact of Reve Antivirus, I used my Dell XPS laptop with an Intel i7-1065G7 CPU and 16 GB of RAM, running Windows 11.

During a full scan, Reve Antivirus used about 30% of my CPU and 450MB of RAM. This is higher than the average antivirus software, which typically uses about 25% CPU and 300MB RAM during a full scan.

This higher resource usage might be noticeable on older or less powerful systems, potentially causing some deceleration during scans.

Reve Antivirus Review: Conclusions

After spending two weeks for this Reve Antivirus review, I have mixed feelings. It's a comprehensive security suite that offers a wide range of features, but it doesn't excel in any particular area.

  • Comprehensive Security Suite: Reve Antivirus offers a full-featured package with antivirus, web protection, ransomware shield, and more.
  • Average Malware Detection: While it detects most threats, it didn't catch all the test malware I downloaded.
  • Decent Web Protection: It blocked most malicious websites, but not all.
  • Extra Features: Includes useful tools like parental control, PC tuneup, and data backup.
  • System Impact: Uses more system resources than average during scans.

Overall, Reve Antivirus is a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. If you're looking for a basic all-in-one security solution, it might fit the bill. However, if you need top-tier protection in specific areas, you might want to look at more specialized or well-established antivirus solutions, such as Norton, TotalAV, or Kaspersky.
