After the release of openSUSE 11.1 RC (Release Candidate) late last month, we are glad to report that the openSUSE operating system is getting that much closer to the end of its development cycle by going gold and by allowing openSUSE fans to pre-order the software product. With the release of the final version of this general purpose operating system, which is scheduled for the 18th of December, the openSUSE Project is planning a big party in Nuremberg, Germany.

For those of you keeping track of these things, on the 18th of November we were reporting that the openSUSE Project dropped openSUSE 11.1 Beta 5, version that was not scheduled for release, but had to be put out there simply because at the time there were too many bugs in the software to allow the openSUSE project to give the Release Candidate the go ahead. A few days later, the openSUSE 11.1 Release Candidate dropped, and since the release coincided with Thanksgiving Day, we had one more thing to be thankful about.

Getting back to the openSUSE 11.1 pre-order business, here is what you can expect to get for your hard earned buck : 32 and 64-bit version on a dual layer DVD9, a NON-OSS add-on CD containing useful applications such as Flash and Acrobat Reader, a hardcopy instructions manual, installation support for a period of about 3 months, and a nice and shinny grey box to put all these goodies in. You will also get an openSUSE branded LED flashlight as a bonus, but only if you live in Germany (sending this item outside of Germany is too much of a hassle).

If you live in Germany, or just happen to be visiting it on the 18th of December, you could pop over to Nuremberg and join the openSUSE 11.1 Final Release Party. The event will debut at 18:00 hours CET (that’s 6 p.m.) and is scheduled to end at 21:00 hours (that’s 9 p.m.). You can expect to get food, drinks, some demo systems and burn service – just make sure to announce your attending.
