iTunes 8.2 and QuickTime 7.6.2: To Update, or Not to Update
Cupertino-based software developer Apple has updated two of its products this week with the release of iTunes 8.2 and QuickTime 7.6.2. These are mainly security updates that plug a few security holes affecting the software; from a security point of view you are very well advised to update iTunes and QuickTime if you have them installed on your machine and stay safe.
Here is what I am talking about: QuickTime 7.6.2 addresses a total of 10 security problems (detailed list available here) which could lead to unexpected application termination and arbitrary code execution; iTunes 8.2 addresses just one vulnerability, but it too could lead to unexpected application termination and arbitrary code execution (details here).
From a security perspective, that should be enough to convince you to update. The urge to press the update button and get the latest version of iTunes 8.2 will become even stronger when you read the update notice: “iTunes 8.2 now supports iPhone or iPod touch with the iPhone 3.0 Software Update. iTunes 8.2 also includes many accessibility improvements and bug fixes.” For all of the above mentioned reasons you are well advised to update; but if you have an iPhone and you want to keep your jailbreak, then you would best stay away from iTunes 8.2 as it breaks QuickPwn and PwnageTool.
The iPhone Dev Team explains: “Apple started pushing out their official iTunes 8.2, which supports mobile devices at firmware 3.0. This update is one of those that incidentally breaks QuickPwn and PwnageTool. It doesn’t seem like an anti-jailbreak. But nonetheless, it will break your ability to re-run QuickPwn or PwnageTool’s dfu-entry. Because this update isn’t a deliberate anti-jailbreak measure, it’s easily fixed in our tools. But we really don’t want to update our tools until 3.0 is out, so please don’t update to 8.2 if you think you’ll need to rejailbreak your device.”
If you would like to get iTunes 8.2, a download location is available here.
