Regardless if you are running Apple’s Mac OS X or Microsoft’s Windows-based operating system on your machine, the newly updated iTunes version 8.1 software comes with a host of new features for you to enjoy. Security has also been on Apple’s mind and consequently iTunes 8.1 managed to plug some security holes that affected the Mac and Windows versions of the software.

iTunes 8.1 also provides support for the brand new 4GB iPod Shuffle, which can boast about being the smallest music player in the world and doing so without sacrificing storage space for size. If you get a new iPod Shuffle and sync it with iTunes 8.1, software will be installed on your OS (be it Mac or Windows) that allows the device to talk to you. This feature is called VoiceOver and enables the iPod Shuffle to tell you what track you are currently listening to, or which playlist you would like to activate.

So what exactly is new in the updated iTunes version 8.1? Here is a list of new and enhanced features:
- Genius playlists and sidebar. Whenever you are listening to a music track and would like iTunes to automatically set up a playlist of similar tracks, click the Genius button. While the Genius playlist buttons allows you to re-discover your songs, the Genius sidebar allows you to seamlessly find new music. Whenever you select a track, the sidebar will display similar tunes from the iTunes Store.
- iTunes Plus, which provides 256KBS AAC encoded tracks, DRM-free.
- HD TV shows
- New visualizer
- Enhanced accessibility. “iTunes 8 is now screen reader friendly on both Mac and PC. Manage your iTunes library using VoiceOver in Mac OS X Leopard or Window-Eyes for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Or use your screen reader to purchase or download content from the iTunes Store — including iTunes U,” explains Apple.
