iPhone OS 3.0 Might Deter Users from Jailbreaking the iPhone

Do not get me wrong, the iPhone Dev Team has already announced that they will be able to jailbreak the iPhone OS 3.0 which experts agreed is “ pretty interesting ”, but the thing is that it comes with such a long list of features that for the first time users will get what they asked for without having to resort to jailbreaking the device.

“For those wondering, yes the 3.0 OS is jailbreakable on all devices. It’s just those using 3G yellowsn0w that have to show some restraint and wait for PwnageTool to create a custom IPSW that avoids the baseband update”, said the iPhone Dev Team yesterday, right before asking jailbreakers not to get the iPhone OS 3.0 via the Dev Center program if they wanted to be able to use YellowSn0w in the future.

As a little recap, here is what the iPhone OS 3.0 brings to the table: copy/cut and paste for text, copy/cut and paste for photos, new Spotlight, Search in Mail and Calendar, 3G tethering, landscape keyboard for certain apps (Mail, Notes, and SMS for example), MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service), web calendars support, enhanced stocks app, stereo Bluetooth A2DP audio, sync Notes via iTunes, shuffle music by shaking the iPhone, Wi-Fi automatic login, phishing protection, enhanced parental controls., new widgets, and various 3rd party apps improvements.

Jeremy Sikora from The iPhone Blog comes with a very interesting question for you all: “Will we still need jailbreaking?” The reasoning behind his question is quite a simple one: Apple has managed to address many of the requirements iPhone users were asking for and consequently they will no longer turn to jailbreaking their device to have their needs met. To my mind, there is one more reason why some people will turn a cold shoulder towards jailbreaking the iPhone – Apple has made sure everyone knows it considers jailbreaking the device copyright infringement and by doing so you are breaking the law. I know they will have a tough time backing up this claim (Mozilla and EFF have already spoken out against Apple), but a law-abiding user that has most of his iPhone needs satisfied, will certainly not want to risk it. The US authorities have already shown that they take copyright infringement seriously when they asked for a music file sharer to get a 6 month sentence ( details here ).

There are still some areas in which the iPhone jailbreak might come in handy, so “it might be a bit premature to cast jailbreaking into the darkness just yet” added Sikora. There are still no iPhone themes and no options for ringers and tones, amongst other things, so until Apple addresses these issues, we will look to the Dev Team for guidance and support.
