Amongst the long, long list of new features you can expect to get with the recently released iPhone OS 3.0, there is one available for MobileMe users that allows them to easily located lost iPhones. The feature is aptly named Find My iPhone and to help your recover your device it employs various strategies which range from playing a sound to displaying a message on the device’s screen and even approximating the device’s location on the map. And it is this map location functionality that helped one iPhone owner recover his smartphone.

Kevin Miller, who was attending a Lego conference in Chicago, managed to have his iPhone stolen while he was out at a restaurant with friends. But luckily for him he is a paying MobileMe customer and as such he could take advantage of the Find My iPhone feature. What ensued was a cross-town chase to catch the thief and get the iPhone back – which he did, at the very last moment the device ran out of battery.

“I'd been amazed that the phone had enough battery life to make it through the night and still beam its location; the moment its battery was dead, then it would be game over for our little scavenger hunt. I unlocked my phone and saw almost 20 missed calls. And then, at that very moment, the iPhone shut down and displayed the "Connect to power" icon. My phone's battery literally hung on until the second it was in my hand. I wuv you, iPhone,” says Kevin Miller on his LiveJournal, where you can read the entire story.

In related iPhone OS 3.0 news, it seems that the iPhone 3G S emits a noise that we cannot hear, but dogs find incredibly annoying. The device produces the noise on these three occasions:
- When you send an SMS message.
- When you lock the screen.
- When you record video.
According to TUAW, the iPhone 3G S gives off the noise only for a short amount of time, but only when you send a text message and lock the screen. The noise is emitted for a longer period of time when you record video.
