Late last week Apple issued version 2.2 of its iPhone and iPod touch operating system, and much has happened since then. The first thing is that the Dev Team have updated their tools meant to jailbreak the iPhone (a how-to guide is available here); the second thing is that the anticipation of getting OS 2.2 has been equaled only by the disappointment of how many flaws plague it.

In terms of iPhone users complaints there are three main categories: 3G connectivity, battery life, and applications or apps. The battery life problem is pretty much self-explanatory, but just to be thorough, we will get into it anyway. If a fully charged iPhone running on OS 2.1 had a battery life of 36 hours (two days and one night), with the recent OS 2.2 update that period of time drops to 9 hours. One of the theories that have been brought forward is that OS 2.2 employs a different algorithm to detect the network.

This would explain why battery life has dropped significantly, and it might even explain why there are issues with 3G connectivity. This is one other problem that has iPhone users shaking their heads in disbelief – OS 2.2 that was supposed to allow for a speedier page load is having issues loading web pages, let alone do it at breakneck speed. Take two same model iPhones, one with OS 2.1 and one with OS 2.2 and you will notice that OS 2.1 loads web pages as usual, while OS 2.2 is very, very sluggish.

In the “applications issues” category there are several things that must be noted. The first is that the OS 2.2 update itself is a troubled process for some, and by that I mean the update process will inexplicably fail or it may get the iPhone device stuck in recovery mode. The second is that some applications simply vanished. They were there before the update, but after the OS 2.2 install they are nowhere to be found (the funny thing is that even delete-proof applications that come bundled with the OS are missing).

Other issues include the following: failure to connect to the wireless LAN, low signal strength, image scale down bugs, 3rd party application compatibility problems, the SIM card is not recognized, Google Maps displays kilometers not miles, some emails have become impossible to delete.
