iPhone OS 2.2 Enhancers: Activate Emoji Icons outside Japan
With the release of the iPhone OS 2.2, the one that many users are complaining about it being plagued with problems, you can take advantage of several new features, among which we will focus on the Emoji style graphics. These are emoticon style icons that look pretty cool and will help you more accurately convey your message to the person you are chatting with. The problem is that you can only use them in Japan – or do you.
That may have been the case until Steven Troughton-Smith starting poking around the iPhone OS 2.2 and figured out a way to activate the Emoji icons for those of us that are a couple million miles away from Japan. On the upside, you will get to use the expressive emoticons; on the downside, activating them takes a bit of programming skills and a little elbow grease.
The thing that most iPhone users (and potential iPhone users, with the emphasis on potential) cannot wrap their heads around is why Apple would resort to blocking these icons outside Japan. It is a very cool feature, not to mention one that has the potential to draw in future customers.
“You need to edit the file /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist on the device -> whether you use a jailbreak to achieve this or merely some iTunes backup editor is up to you,” says Steven Troughton-Smith. An iPhone OS 2.2 jailbreak has already been released by the Dev Team and we at FindMySoft have already covered a detailed guide on how to jailbreak your iPhone OS 2.2.
The next step in activating the Emoji icons is to add the “KeyboardEmojiEverywhere” boolean as true, then access Settings -> Keyboards -> Japanese, and then turn on Emoji. The Japanese icons will from that moment on be available for text view, field view, on web pages, and even in SpringBoard (titles of items).
