iPhone OS 2.2.1 Is Here, Color Me Unimpressed

It seems that the OS 2.2.1 update has had some unexpected results. iPhone users are reporting they are no longer getting the error message when attempting to send out text messages (fix which Apple mentioned nothing about). Regarding the issue of jailbreaking your iPhone, it looks like OS 2.2.1 does not have a negative impact on it. It does break the 3G software unlock though.

Apple has just recently released an update for the iPhone’s operating system, mainly OS 2.2.1. Now unlike the release of OS 2.2, which launched a torrent of complaints, people are not talking about how the OS has had a negative impact on their device, but they are talking nonetheless. OS 2.2.1 is meant to be a bug fix and security update – minor ones.

With the OS 2.2.1 Apple addressed just a couple for issues within the software: it fixed the incorrect Camera Roll display of images that were saved from mail messages, and has made the built-in Safari browser more stable. iPhone and iPod touch users will be prompted to update the first time they connect these devices to their Macs and click the “Check for Updates” button in iTunes. Be warned though that the update albeit a minor one, weighs in at a staggering 246.4MB.

It goes without saying that iPhone users are not exactly pleased with this update. Instead of getting things they really wanted, things like copy and paste. Bluetooth support, MMS, or any other bonus feature, they got a minor update that you cannot get anyway, because it may have the potential to break your iPhone jailbreak. Yes, the iPhone Dev Team has posted a warning which stated: “There is an iPhone and iPod update available in iTunes - it is numbered 2.2.1 (5H11a). Please DO NOT update. We will investigate and report back to you ASAP.”

The only bonus that I can see in OS 2.2.1 is that for iPod touch users it fixes one additional problem, aside from the two mentioned above: ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) will no longer skip while listening to your favorite tracks (which you will agree that it was pretty annoying to say the least).

What are you to do? If you want to get the functionality of the OS 2.2.1 update and do not much care about jailbreaking/unlocking your iPhone, then by al means go ahead and update. If you want to be able to jailbreak it, better postpone the update until the Dev Team figures it out.
