The iPhone Dev Team has updated the tools that you can use to jailbreak and carrier unlock the Apple developed smartphone, the iPhone 3G S, mainly redsn0w 0.8 and ultrasn0w 0.8. With these updated versions of redsn0w and ultrasn0w any user will be able to toss away the limitations that Apple imposed on the iPhone 3G S, even if jailbreaking has been deemed by security expert Charlie Miller as a risk (details here).

“Last night we released updated versions of our redsn0w jailbreak and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. These versions are now compatible with the iPhone 3GS running at 3.0. Welcome aboard, 3GS owners! (The tools of course remain compatible with all of the other platforms too). Also last night, saurik released 3GS-compatible versions of MobileSubstrate and WinterBoard, components that enable many different add-ons and themes,” explained the iPhone Dev Team.

This update comes after a previous announcement telling iPhone 3G S users that the Dev Team can indeed jailbreak the device, but that they will not make a jailbreak tool available. The Dev Team motivated this course of action by saying that they need to keep the jailbreak out of Apple’s sights; the Dev Team added that releasing the jailbreak tool would not be to the benefit of the many (details here).

If the Dev Tem decided to follow the “we will hold back the jailbreak for now” course of action, original iPhone hacker George Hotz decided to go exactly the other way. And by that I meant he released an iPhone 3G S jailbreak tool called purplera1n that works on Windows and Mac OS X-powered machines. George Hotz announced at the moment that he usually waits for the Dev Team to release jailbreak tools, but since they decided not to do so, he took matters into his own hands and put out purplera1n. He also added that waiting to release the jailbreak tool is not worth it (details here).

“We realize we upset some folks (e.g. existing 3GS owners) with our earlier announcement that we wanted to hold onto the 3GS iBoot-family hole until 3.1 was out,” explained the Dev Team. “Our aim there was to get as many people as possible onboard (within reason of course) before revealing the hole, since Apple will fix it immediately. But all of that became moot when the purplera1n release was made, since it uses the same hole.”
